The USAS has this to say about safety, these are good rules:
- Always assume every firearm is loaded
- Make sure your firearm is pointed in a safe direction
- Use the Safety switch, but never assume it is working - Keep your finger away from the trigger until ready to shoot
- Read the owners manual
- Know how to use the Safety switch
- Know how to safely load and unload
- Use the right ammunition - Wear ear and eye protection
- Inspect your firearm for clear barrels and safe operating condition before shooting
- Ensure a safe backstop
- Use a standard procedure to safely pass firearms
- Clean firearms after use outdoors then wash your hands and face
- Secure firearms for safe storage and transportation
- Never use drugs or alcohol when handling a firearm
