I think you have to spend a great deal of money to get one that is reliable.

'Biometric' is the phrase you are looking for. I have no personal experience with them, as they are too rich for my blood. Some people seem to love them, I've always wondered what happens when the batteries run down, or if hard wired, when the power gets shut down. Here in Florida after a Hurricane, I've been without power for 2wks+ at a time.

I have a small (abt 12"deep, 10" wide and 3"tall) bolt down model with 5 buttons across the front OOOOO. The combination can be set for push combos. Works w/o power and in the dark.

I couldn't find a model or company on it. Most sides are covered since I bolted it down. The lock type is called Simplex. I googled around and a company called V-Line Industries makes similar ones sold by Cabela's and elsewhere.

I assume we are talking about a locked box to put your weapon in while you are at home. If you have children (under the age of 17yrs) living in the home then the law requires safe storage of the weapon by keeping it in a locked box or otherwise rendering it inoperable by means of a trigger lock or other device. The law is aimed at protecting children and, on the surface, seems like a reasonable thing to do. But while the law may protect children from getting their hands on a gun and doing harm to themselves or someone else, it also makes keeping a gun in the house for security purposes almost pointless. It's a no brainer that the less accessible a firearm is the less use it is in home defense. I don't have any children living in my apartment, but plenty of people here do have children and face this dilemma all the time. How do you protect your home while making sure the gun is inaccessible and inoperable at the same time? I don't have to deal with this problem since I am single and have no kids; but I am wondering how you guys with kids deal with this issue?

My little safe is in the central part of the house. I can't compromise on kiddy safety so compromise on lockup location.

I watched an episode of Myth Busters and they were able to defeat biometric thumb locks with a photocopy of a thumb print ( http://www.metacafe.com/watch/252534/myth_busters_finger_print_lock/). The more expensive the lock the easier it was to defeat. I don't know if I'd trust them to protect you from burglars, but it might still be OK to keep your kids out.
