Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will unveil his party's plan to restrict assault rifles and handguns in Toronto today.
Today's Liberal announcement is expected to be a two-pronged policy promise to restrict or prohibit assault rifles and to allow cities to impose bans on handguns. The policy differences between the Liberals and Conservatives on guns are stark.

In a radio interview in Kitchener earlier this week, Trudeau accused Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer of "being in the pocket" of the gun lobby. During an event in Saint John today, Scheer called that a "ridiculous accusation" made by a leader mired in scandal and desperate to change the channel. "Our plan goes after the real criminals. We're going after illegal firearms, we're standing up for honest Canadians, farmers and hunters, people who use firearms responsibly and legally," he said.

"It's easy to ask law-abiding Canadians to follow more laws. It's harder to go after the criminals and illegal firearms. Conservatives are ready to do the hard work that will actually improve safety in our communities."

When politicians are in trouble, they try and change the story. Same on the other side of the border.

@JustinTrudeau
Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We will ban all military-style assault rifles, give municipalities the ability to restrict or ban handguns, and strengthen gun control.
This distraction will work on the kind of people who vote for Justin Trudeau.

The Conservative Party got a bounce after the "blackface scandal", but Liberals could still pull off victory. 338 Commons seats are in play.
The Conservatives are ahead in Western Canada while the Liberals are ahead in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The races are relatively close in B.C. and Ontario. The New Democrats [social democratic] are on track to lose most or all of their seats in Quebec, while the Greens are holding double-digits in B.C. and Atlantic Canada. The Bloc Québécois [center-left] is in range of winning at least the 12 seats needed for recognized party status in the House of Commons. The People's Party [right wing] has yet to show the concentration of support in any region of the country needed to win a seat, beyond potentially leader Maxime Bernier's.

He was a teacher (graduate of McGill & UBC), he didn't follow his father into the law but his sister did.
Surprised that the school administration didn't clamp down on his blackface shows, but they were probably just very flattered to have an authentic Trudeau among the academic staff. Right now the federal election polls are in the margin of error and it's possible that the Liberals will pull off another win with a majority in the H of C.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberals pulled it off, they won the federal election. Trudeau will head a minority government so will need support from two minor parties. Liberals won 36 more seats (ridings) than the Conservatives, even though the Conservatives won the popular vote. It wasn't just Justin's blackface scandal, it came out during the election that the Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer holds dual citizenship - Canadian and American and never mentioned it before it was reported in newspapers. Apparently he applied to renounce it just before the election but it takes 9 to 10 months. In a highly unusual move during the election, Obama announced his support for Trudeau while Trump stayed silent.
