Apparently this is an explicit recognition that "gun free zones" don't work very well. At least if you are a cop. I wonder if we are seeing a pattern that might extend beyond political talking points? DC chief ironically advocating self defense, campus cop saying gun free zones are kinda silly (at least with regards to the police).

3It's nothing new, but now it's getting attention.
The Board of Regents of one of our state supported universities decided several years ago that their campus police should be unarmed. (Visions of UK bobbies, I guess - and idealistic vision versus real world tasking.) The Department of Labor and Industries pretty much bitch-slapped them and decreed that, if they were going to call them campus "police" instead of "security," they had to arm them. I don't doubt this has played out similarly in other states as well.
