"Light sentences have helped normalize gun crimes. That should change.
six young men who burst into an apartment in 2016 waving around AK-47s, intending to rob its occupants, walked away with suspended sentences."

plea bargained down and walked with suspended sentences, WTF!? this is not rare, in some courts it's the norm. laws on the books are just not enforced. why should there be an argument about how many rounds a magazine holds, when the law on the books that says a criminal using a gun goes to jail is not enforced?

The editorial board says the following:
Meanwhile, St. Louis police this week are investigating at least a half-dozen recent firearms murders around the city — the latest reminder that people intent on causing harm don’t even hesitate to use guns to that end.
And then suggests "sensible gun control" would be the preferred solution.

The editorial board wants "a zero-tolerance approach to any crime involving a gun, including mandatory prison any time a firearm is used threateningly." Yeah. That will fix it.

To your point, here is a thread on how they handle career criminals with firearm offenses in MA:
Massachusetts LEO killed by career criminal with prior weapons, violence charges
