7 officers shot, 1 fatally, in South Carolina standoff
FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — A police officer was killed and six of his comrades were wounded when a man began shooting at deputies who came to serve a search warrant, barricading himself in his home with children and spraying bullets across his upscale suburban neighborhood, authorities said.

The sheriff's armored personnel carrier was brought in to recover the wounded Wednesday, and the shooter finally released the children as he was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff, authorities said.

"Officers went there unknowing the firepower the suspect had," Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said at a news conference.

The slain officer was a 30 year veteran of the local PD.
"Officers went there unknowing the firepower the suspect had," Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said at a news conference. "Fire was being shot all over. The way this suspect was positioned, his view of fire was several hundred yards. So he had an advantage. The officers couldn't get to the ones who were down."

The violence stunned people already dealing with record flooding from Hurricane Florence. Both the sheriff and police chief both cried as they spoke to reporters after the standoff.
Officials refused to say why they were serving a warrant. They did not name the suspect. They also did not identify the wounded officers or describe their conditions.
Authorities said the shootings happened in Vintage Place, an upscale neighborhood in the western part of the city.

Jeez, pretty much every officer's worst nightmare. Walk into a straight-up ambush.

The perp must have used a auto-loader rifle. I wonder if it was a 5.56 or 7.62 - any reports? To face the business end of any rifle like that... Bullets must have been penetrating the wall and front door giving officers no realistic cover or safety. -Horrible.

A second law enforcement officer has died after an ambush in a Florence, South Carolina, neighborhood earlier this month that left five others wounded. Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said Deputy Farrah B. Turner died Monday. She had been hospitalized since the attack. Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said Deputy Farrah B. Turner died Monday. She had been hospitalized since the attack. Turner had been in critical condition at the hospital since she and six other law enforcement officers were ambushed while attempting to serve a warrant on Oct. 3. Boone said in a statement that Turner "was the ultimate professional, excelling at everything she did. She dedicated her life to serving the victims of the worst crimes imaginable."

Authorities say Turner was among seven law enforcement officers shot by 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins. They say the decorated Vietnam War opened fire without warning when officers arrived at his home Oct. 5 to speak with his son about a sex assault investigation. Three deputies and four Florence city police officers were shot. Florence Police Officer Sgt. Terrence Carraway died at the scene. Officer Scott Williamson remains in critical condition. Two deputies, Sarah Miller and Arie Davis, were released from the hospital over the weekend. Frederick Hopkins Jr. is charged with one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder. Officials have not yet said when those charges will be upgraded.
