Yeah, it does feel a lot like the M1 Carbine. I like the feel of it a lot.

I don't keep any guns accessible around the house especially when my grandson is around. They are all locked in my gunroom. However, I always keep a handgun and a rifle in my truck and I switch them around a lot. My mainstays are an older 6 shot S & W 686 .357 wheelgun [I don't care for the newer 7 round cylinders] and a Mod. 94 .30-30 Ackley Improved lever gun with a 1.5 x 5 Leupold on it. There isn't much I can't do with that Ackley from prairie dogs to elk. [I have a dozen rifles that are earmarked for my grandson when he comes of age and that Ackley is on the top of the list.]

I'm not worried in the least bit so all of my guns are in the basement with the cabinet door wide open and ammo scattered all over the place.

When I get this 38special 1871 revolver this spring I may just have to get a 38/357 lever action next year to go along with it. I could shoot the 38's at the range and the 357 for upclose deer hunting. A 357 in a rifle is a totally different round than in a revolver.

I have never been a fan of pistol cal semi-auto carbines because they've all looked to tactical. That Ruger (I guess that's what you guys are talking about) has a bit of a sporter look to it so that's something I wouldn't be opposed to having it. I just have no whatsoever for it.

The double-barrel behind the door. A few shells hidden nearby.

AmirMortal: Is that an Arsenal AK? I got the SLR- 106 in 5.56x 45mm.
As for home defense:
I keep a cell phone on the nightstand beside a Makarov 9x 18mm. Yeah it's small, but easy to conceal. I live in a one story house and its a hell of a lot easier to jump out the window and run screaming like a little bitch into the night than deal with a corpse- especially if its mine. Besides I just painted the walls and bloodstains are goddamned hard to get out.
Now can you imagine doing that and carrying a Mossberg 12- guage with all that " tacti- cool" shit plastered all over it? " Oh, hello officer!" BLAMBLAMBLAM!!! go the S&W .40s.
Unfortunately that is not what usually happens in a home invasion. Usually one of the parties is surprised by the other and things go downhill from there if one or both are armed. Instead of the classic " bump- in- the- night" scenario beloved by gun nuts everywhere, the " walk- in- during- daylight- holy- shit- there- is- a - stranger- in- my- house" scenario is much more common.
Hope you have practiced running away or drawing your gun very quickly.

I'm 6'4" so I was born with long arms. If some drunk breaks into my house they will be confronted by a 265 pound naked berserk wielding a USMC bolo that I inherited from my uncle who was issued it for sentry removal during WWII, he was a raider.

You're correct, sir. Avoidance is always the best. Walking in on a burglar is much more likely than one waking you up and giving you ample opportunity to get the upper hand as he fumbles w/ the door/window! My above-stated home defense is more intended for the instances when I hear a 4-wheeler or 4WD tearing up my property late at night, or see a light on over in my shop when I know I turned them all off. I like sending those mixed messages, like when I approach the 4WD stuck axle-deep in mud and politely ask the kids inside if they need any help - all w/ my shotgun held at port arms. It helps to have a reputation as being a little crazy.... ;)

Just for clarification- 1) I live alone, so I don't have to worry about getting family members out safely.
2) I live in an urban area, so carrying a long arm outside is not a good idea.
I understand that you have to come up with different strategies based on your living circumstances. Jumping out of a window is probably a poor choice when you live on the second story of a house in the suburbs. :D
