we used to live in a marble town, where they dug, cut and carved the local stone for the last 150 years. the place is full of rejects, some perfect but not used for one reason or another. the street gutters were literally made of marble slabs, so you just never know what you'll find buried in the yard. we have a piece dedicated to igor stravinsky, it was supposed to go on a concert hall during a lull in the cold war but things got hot again so the project was cancelled. it's part of a birdbath now.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?

So now we’ve let it dry out we can see we got the interior laid down nice. I had to go back a couple times to get it here, it’s sometimes hard to see where it’s still high when it’s wet.

So now we’re ready for the base coat, kelly green, ‘natch.

Ok so the green base coat is on and dried, however we have a bit of a problem; due to the heavy handed tool work we did, combined with the forming work, the shell doesn’t want to lay flat. The dye blocking technique I am going to use works best when the piece is perfectly flat, so we’re going to wet the shell up and let it dry under a flat surface plus some weight to get it nice and flat.

So now we’re ready to block in the black top coat;

I made a fresh block for this one. It’s just a couple layers of old t-shirt, use little upholstery tacks to stick it to the Little block of 2x4, wrap a couple of times, pulling it as tight as you can, then tack it back in.

Block the black top coat in;

As you can see, it wasn’t 100% effective, we ended up with some black in the areas we tried to bevel down flat. That being said, I’m still pretty happy. It’ll look even better when I put some shiny seal coat on it.

Fit shell to outer holster

Dye outer holster using green with black blocking as previous;

Hit with clear coat

Use small bevel to take top and bottom edges off the outer holster, then use gum tragacanth and burnishing tool to treat edges, followed by black edge coat.
