M1 Garand bolt assembly

The M1 Garand bolt is a pretty simple device. The parts; the bolt, extractor, extractor spring plunger, cartridge ejector and spring and a firing pin. Lightly oil all parts. First insert firing pin into bolt. It will only go in one way.

Next insert the extractor spring plunger. Then insert the cartridge ejector and spring. Note there is a notch on the cartridge ejector. Pre-align it so extractor will pass through with the cartridge ejector compressed.

With a solid plastic pen or dowel push the cartridge ejector in and at the same time push the extractor toward the bolt body. Once the extractor is part way in the spring won’t fly off. Be careful to not let off pressure on the extractor, doing so will result in the cartridge ejector spring flying out. Firmly push the extractor toward the bolt. The extractor spring plunger will give some resistance but it will compress and allow the extractor to seat.

That is very cool. I've never taken my bolt apart. Basically I cleaned it with the "solvent-blow out with air-oil-blow out with air" strategy, as mine looked very clean from the outside. Did you find hella grunge in there, or was it pretty clean?

My new part and old were both pretty clean. It’s only supposed to have light oil on the parts. If the pin had not broken I might have not either. I’ll outline the steps above tonight.
