imo pistols are for up close, 15 yds or less. unless someone is shooting at me already i think i'd have problems justifying shooting beyond that. i can see practicing for accuracy tho.

To me shooting pistols is a sport. Listening to the clang of a 100yd gong is quite enjoyable to me. You want to improve your skills than one way to enhance them is to make your targets smaller.

How about not having an outdoor range anywhere around? All I have available are indoor ranges unless I want to travel for 90 or more minutes.
At that point I'd want a smaller caliber.
My revolver shoots .357 and also shoots .38, which I prefer to shoot.

.38 Special is perfect for indoor target shooting. I borrow my wife's. The .22LR is the most economical and practical for general practice indoors for me.

In NJ, each time you want to buy a handgun, you must apply at your local police dept for a permit (you can apply for multiple permits at once). This can take days or weeks to be approved, assuming you already have your FPID card. You have 90 days to make the purchase, then must wait 30 days before you can seek to have another permit approved. Gov. Murphy is pushing to raise the permit fee from $2 to $50, which will INCREASE purchases--because nobody's going to spend $50 and then let the permit lapse!

My point is you tend to be very, very careful and particular about hand gun purchases, and you need a safe storage mechanism for each. So I have no interest in purchasing a .22LR pistol when .38 is cheap enough, and my semis are 9mm, which is also relatively inexpensive.

Besides, lots of folks shoot much heavier stuff at the ranges I go to, including various .44 and .45 as well as .40 and 10mm. So I wear ear plugs and -30db ear muffs.

Hand guns are for me the most difficult to use of firearms. I see them as a challenge.

I practice every weekend! But I have yet to develop the confidence to try 50 yards. I think two handed with the Mark IV I could probably hit the target a few times out of ten shots, but with the .45? Not at this time.
I bought a bunch of "repair centers" for 25 yard targets. They are about 11" x 11". When I started putting them out at 25, it seemed ridiculous, but it was interesting because it made me practice for the 25 yard Christmas Tree ornament shoot (2" ball, 25 yards, 5 shots, open sights only) So far (with practice) I have only failed on the Christmas Tree balls once, out of 4 attempts. I am now happily getting 10 shots out of 10 on paper (forget the scoring rings - they're for folks that REALLY know how to shoot)

The farther you push it, the better you get. BUT, I do always allow myself a 7 yard target before going home - just to feel good about it. :)

Keep at it - you'll get there.

A friend suggested you always start with a handgun at a range at a distance of 15 yards...because that's probably closest to what you'll face if someone breaks in your house--your first shot. Scary as hell but makes sense.

I'm pretty well set with 5 yards.

I am guilty of most everything stated here. Those of you who know me can attest.
The one difference that keeps me shooting indoor ranges is the pricing. Every outdoor range, around here at least, changes you the "All Day Fee" plus a charge for each additional firearm. For example, if I take two pistols and two rifles that amounts to a $35.00 trip. $20.00 Range plus $5.00 for the extra guns.
Indoor ranges, all that I go to, charge by the "Gentleman's Hour" $16.00 and you can bring however many guns you want.
Grant it I leave the rifle caliber and long guns home for the outdoor trips. My range goes out to 20 yards, which is challenging enough for my larger caliber hand guns i.e. 10mm, 44Mag, 50AE.

Yes, but the times I've been with you we were at an outdoor range and you don't fire that 50 of yours for a full hour! I'm convinced now we got unlucky and got stuck near gun tourists.
:roflmao: PS. I think we had the "gentlemens hour" as well. Think we were there over a hour.

I was only disturbed by the large caliber because it almost ruined my wife's interest in going with me to the range. Once we got my wife's muffs, additional protection in place and started shooting I only noticed it when I wasn't.

I feel very lucky to live where I do. Besides having a 40 acre property for all of my pistol and rifle shooting there is numerous sites on public land for shooting. In fact so many places to shoot that shooting ranges are an extreme rarity since they cost money and why pay if you can shoot for free without any rules. South of me around the Twin Cities it's different.

I can see it all change in the future because so many people are pigs and make a big mess of the old depleted gravel pits. It's to bad but I guess inevitable.

I know it's a hike up to Lockhart; but the entire range is outdoor with 75-100 yard rifle range. $17 gets you all day access, no gun limit, no re-entry fee. Heck, there's world-class BBQ not 10 minutes from the range too.

Wow! Range fees here are MUCH higher--$20-$25 /hour for pistol ranges, $25-$30 for rifle ranges. One range (GFH), charges for eye and ear protection if you don't have it, and makes you buy their "special" targets for the rifle range. RTSP doesn't charge for E&E protection or force you to buy targets.

But both will not anymore rent to anyone unless they come as a pair, or bring their own firearm.

I wear earplugs under earmuffs at both indoor and outdoor ranges, don't wish to be bothered by some clown with a large-caliber pistol like a S&W 500 or .50 cal at the public (pubic) range.
I'd say go early like 9-10am before the bozos show up.
Like going to the grocery store, I go at 9am before the loonies/morons start filing in by 11am, with their equally offensive mis-behaving offspring.

Lesson learned. We're going to be there at the opening bell and with additional foam from now on! :beer2: You're also right about grocery stores. We went to one at 8am one Saturday! Wonderful!

The indoor ranges I frequent all have their LTC classes shooting at the opening bell. Sometimes it is hard to get an open lane. Food for thought.

That said, it is a fun training session if you follow along with the instructors cadence. "Load three, shoot only one on my command, fire, fire, fire, Load six, shoot three in 10 secs on my command, Fire!

Oh, I troll those classes. Fire off the cadence, watch everyone on the line get confused. :roflmao:

Consider going later in the day? I tend to show up an hour and a half before closing and often have the place to myself.
