German History X

1
A three part miniseries about events that happened in Germany when neo-Nazis tried to ignite a race war by killing immigrant Turks in a killing spree lasting years. Part 1 starts with the fall of Communism in East Germany and follows some aimless teenagers and how they got recruited into right wing extremism by those who exploited their anger and insecurity. Part 2 is told from the viewpoint of their victims and their families and how the prejudiced polizei assumed that because they were Turks that it had to be some kind of organized crime murders, thus delaying catching the real killers by years. Part 3 tracks the cops in a more traditional police procedural and details how they finally caught the killers.

For you CZ nuts on here you might be interested to know that the same gun was used for all the murders: a Ceska 83 with a suppressor.

Understanding violent right wing extremism is timely for all the obvious reasons.
Available on Netflix. In German. Subtitled.

I'm watching "Mindhunter" now too. It's well done and enjoyable. Not your typical serial killer thriller. My partner was a newspaper reporter who lived in Santa Cruz and worked for the San Jose Mercury News when Kemper, the Coed Killer was caught and tried. Santa Cruz was the "murder capital of the world" for a time because there were something like three serial killers at work there at the same time. He didn't write any stories on Kemper himself, but he did re-writes of other reporter's stories about it (he was on the re-write desk at the time). I remember the Jury Room bar featured in the show: it was still there when I lived there.

One chilling quote my partner remembers, but was not put in the series:
"I didn't kill 11 co-eds and my mother. I killed 11 co-eds instead of my mother." (Kemper killed mommy last)

That is a very chilling quote. The actor who plays Kemper (Cameron Britton) is terrific. There are prison interviews with Kemper on the youtube, he comes across as intelligent and articulate. I lived in the Bay Area at that time but I don't specifically remember Kemper, there seemed to be a lot happening then. By doing re-writes your partner got a quick education. Netflix renewed "Mindhunter" for a second season even before it aired according to sources on the net. I was surprised Jonathan Groff got the lead, but he's good playing John Douglas.

Charlie Rose interviewed Producer/Director David Fincher along with Groff and McCallany last week about the series.

I'm watching German History X. Interesting because it's kind of a forgotten time in history, the end of the Berlin Wall but more importantly the end of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) set up by the Russians as it united with the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). I think the original German title was better - In the Middle of Germany: National Socialist Underground.

I crossed paths with Kemper very briefly when I was stationed in Monterey in '72-'73. We didn't even really meet, but at 6-09 and 250 or so he's not difficult to remember.
