Potential 3 Gun Shooting Event 10/27 Friday- Opinions Wanted

#1 Post by Catalyst » Wed Jul 12, 2017 2:55 pm

For those planning or thinking of attending the Annual Meeting in North Houston area (Conroe, TX), how many of you would be interested in the following type of event:
  • Event: Private 3-Gun Course w/ Basic Instruction on how to shoot a course (for first time 3 gun shooters; if needed).
    Date: Friday, Oct 27th
    Time: 3PM - 7PM
    Location: Thunder Gun Range
Details: 3 Stages. Round Count: 54-60 Pistol, 54-60 Rifle, 24-30 Shotgun (subject to change on difficulty of stages).
    Cost: TBD
Firearms: I'll be bringing my rifle, shotgun and side arm for those that would like to borrow either if you aren't bringing any firearms. Others in the local area of Houston have expressed similar thoughts. So you don't have to have your gear to participate.
AMMO: I'll have ammo for my gear based on turn out. If you could of course bring your own (factory bought if you are to use my firearms).
I'm blasting this out to the general population to gauge interest. I would need at least 6 people other than myself to make this a doable event in my opinion.

ATXGUNGUY mentioned that IF this event is held early Sunday morning instead of Friday 3pm, might bring about more participation. If this is the case, please let me know your thoughts on this.

My goal for the event, to introduce people to competition shooting that haven't tried it yet and/or to shoot our guns that involves moving (ie something other than just shooting from the line).

Edit: Added date to title.

Thread bump for our evening crowd.

If you intend on coming to the Houston meeting this year and are interested, let us know. This should be fun.

It's not looking good. Maybe I need to market this as a John Wick match or something. LOL

Right? We'll at least get a bunch outraged participants. I even bought a AR takedown case for the trip.

Absolutely. Can we do regular 3 gun and heavy metal?

That would be fun! My semi action shotgun is only 2+1 rounds but my pump is 5+1 so I guess I can make it work. Good on handgun and carbine, though.

What ammo is required for the shotgun? Buck or slug or will bird do?

I know Catalyst has a semi-auto, but I'd also like to try my luck with my 5+1 Pump Shotgun. :)

Could always get some of those super short Aguila shells if they're allowed and will feed. That should up the capacity by 2-3 rounds and lower recoil.

I would speculate that all shotgun rounds will be #7 or #8 bird shot. That last match we did have 3 targets that required slug but that complicates things.

And pump action is absolutely acceptable. It doesn't matter really what gear you have. You probably won't be winning any stages, but its not about winning, its about having a great time.

We have access to steel so we will incorporate some of this.

Personally, since I've done action shooting before and because I want to focus on club stuff and meeting people I probably won't attend this. Anyone who is curious about action shooting should definitely attend! It's the best antidote to internet marksmanship bragging and a hell of a lot of fun to boot.

Not sure how the rules are going to work, but tagging along to witness the spectacle should be half the fun too.

My plane lands at 2:34. The range is about 25 miles from IAH? I don't know what traffic will be like, but I will probably stop in to check it out.

Maybe a little less. If you're not renting a car or hiring a cab, let me know and I'll pick you up.

You're welcome. Just PM me your airline and flight # at some point and we'll get coordinated from there.

Responding to the OP late... (sorry!)

I'd be interested in participating in the 3 Gun event on Friday. Count me in. I'll be flying in, and will try to arrive with a handgun and rifle, but will be without shotgun.

I've never done an event like this before, so I'd need some instruction...

I can bring Shotguns. I just don't know which style would be better. I have an 870 Express Magnum (Pump), a Beretta A300 Outlander (Semi-Auto), and I also have a Weatherby PA-459 (Pump) that is shorter and has a pistol grip. Also What type of shells would be appropriate?
