British 303 questions & variations

1
A friend is blowing through town and wants to shoot his 1917 Lee-Enfield so I volunteer to load up a bunch.

This 303 is 312 so I find some .312 in 123g. My Lyman book says OAL 2.9" but my bullets, intended for 7.62x39 hardly have anything in the neck when I set them at 2.9"

Ques: I can get a good tight fit at about 2.8ish. Powder is 42.8g of 3031. Low pressure for this dinosaur. I don't have access to his gun so I can't check feeding. It's bolt action, for crying out loud, so a little short should't effect it but what about increased pressure from shaving off a little OAL?

Puffing up is no substitute for smarts but it's a common home remedy
