I think I can find a decent beginner bow for the wife, but the 4 year old?
Without going nerf, any suggestions?

2Bear used to make very light youth bows, see if you could find one of those.

3Four as in nearly five? My kid will be four next week. I've been working with him on casting with his fishing rod. He's been begging for a real lure for a couple of weeks so yesterday I tied one on for him but cut the hook in half. Immediately I turned my back for a second to cast my own rod I felt his lure and bobber hit me in the forearm - really glad I bobbed his hook. Every kid is different but I'm not sure mine is even close to ready for projectile weapons.
I have one of these paid for and ready for pickup for his B-day, though.http://www.redlinebicycles.com/bikes/bm ... ne-pitboss

6Jeez! Go get a stick and a piece of string. Wrap some tape around the middle of the stick if you want to get high tech.
A really fancy stick would be a split hickory rod like is used to make muzzleloader ramrods, available from Dixie Gun Works and probably also from someone less politically reprehensible.

I think I had a plastic bow at one point when I was just about that age. I also had my own pocket knife and a machete too, of which my dad usually carried at that point, but they were mine. I could use them any time that was appropriate, and all I had to do was ask for them, and demonstrate proper handling and safe use.

11Sorry I really know nothing about archery...
Hey, so while we're on the topic of children and danger, if you consider introducing your child to knives at any point (yeah, yeah, I like puns), this one looks promising:

12Wife gets a cheap recurve until I see if it sticks, then maybe a nice takedown.

18Looks like I will be shopping around fit a proper bow for her. Birthday presents never work out this well.

19Definitely keep "The boy gets this until I find something better:" forever! That's the best "first bow" Ive ever seen and built by Dad. I remember "in boyscouts" making a bow with my dad out of a Yau bush.
Re: The boy and the wife are interested...
20That bow above with the green handle--I got one for my wife so she could mess around. It is a very weak bow, but good for beginners.
I got it at Big5.
