So, I was grabbing some archery accessories for my wife when I ran across this:

So, yeah, bought one, neat, 40 pound draw, 72 inches, looks handmade, indeed. Will shoot it tomorrow.
Might be fun, certainly inexpensive.

4Ok, it's very cool, and very different. For 50 bucks, I recommend. The guy runs an eBay store (link above) and hand carves these. I would suggest getting one with an arrow rest. I will have to leather wrap the one, the arrows bit my finger
Re: English longbow
5A knock might help too. I do not see one, nor do I know if its required, but it would seem a good idea for consistent placement of your arrow, along with the rest.
Re: English longbow
6Yeah, it has neither. I will probably do a leather wrap hand guard and rest over the next couple weeks. Not sure about a knock point on the string.
Re: English longbow
7Nock points are good. Put one on.
I'd like to get or make one of these some day.

9My old friend Dick Palmer, in his younger days would shoot a 125# English longbow. Dick is pushing 80 and the last time I shot with him he was shooting a 36#@32" Howard Hill longbow.
Here's a book Dick wrote about longbows. I read it years ago. Seems it was more about him than longbows.

Re: English longbow
12On second thought, disregard my previous post. Thinking about how much fun can be had with all calibers of firearms, there's no reason to shoot 30.06 all the time, every time you shoot. It looks like fun. It's been too long since I've launched an arrow.

Re: English longbow
13An archer only needs monster power when driving an arrow through a saber toothed wildebeest. For normal target stuff, somewhere between 40 and 55 is good, I've read. My recurve is 48 and my compound is 54. No reason to punish one's body. Real life does that in spades.
If your bag is closer than 30 yards, then you can shoot an even lighter bow, or if you're a very small person or a woman with under developed muscles. I think archers of either gender who shoot frequently have a 28 pounder up in the rafters somewhere that they graduated out of.
