Hey Sheepishlion,
I went in there once and got the same impression. Thanks!

I'm local, live in South Austin. Currently shoot out at http://www.lonestargunrange.com/ if not out at a friends. Not a big fan of Red's North or South, they just rubbed me the wrong way the few times I've gone in.. KickABuck

Red's (both north and south) get very busy on weekends with every gun nut and wannabee doomsday prepper coming out the woodwork, most of which wouldn't know the difference in a firearm magazine from People magazine, let alone how to properly handle a weapon without muzzle sweeping the entire range every time they reload.
I can somewhat empathize with the staff being very curt and to the point when it comes to big crowds as the liability is all on their hands coupled with the fact they are dealing with a mostly ignorant, knowledgeable customer.
That said, I've been to Red's North on a Monday and the staff were more than happy to set me up with a lane, make some small talk while things got set up and inside the range, and they didn't even charge me or my friends the full amount owned.
You mileage may very greatly depending on who is working that day and who exactly is on the range with you.

The best BBQ is the one we each of us make at home, or at the outdoors. Then, THE best BBQ is Cooper's BBQ at the Llano, TX, joint: http://www.coopersbbqllano.com/Texas Monthly be damned (spits piss), http://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/top50 We should do a "friendly" Austin vs. D/FW thing. I'm not far past the gun novice stage myself. What I know I learned at summer camp and then in the USAF 25 years ago. But I ALWAYS treat a gun like it's loaded even if the breech is open and I don't point it at anyone, and am always surprised when all these people in the gun stores don't follow that rule.
I live very close to Red's South. Didn't someone go in there a year or two ago, rent a gun, and shoot her(?)self with it?
As for going to Lone Star, I had hoped to take my 15-year-old there and then bbq after (he's a self-styled connoisseur), but my wife won't let him anywhere near my pistol! Sigh, a topic for another day...

Am new to Texas and guns of any sort (have spent some time with cousins/uncles shooting trap and/or trying out a new handgun). I just signed up for the KR Basic Pistol 1 class in early October. Anyone who would like to try to go shooting after that with me (or do some pre-class training) let me know. I'm one of those "damn Illinois transplants".

Also, stop by the Introduction section to say hi and share something about your interest in firearms, and stuff, to the whole club when you get a chance From the DFW area, glad you're here... Xela

I have 0 weapons. But would gladly help pay for ammunition and even some amount of "rental" fee to those of you with handguns for me to try out (if this happens before I purchase). But I am pretty excited about the prospect!

All I have is 1.25 pistols. A SIG SP2022 like ATXgunguy, and a layaway on a Beretta 90-Two. I'm sure we can fix you up.

No, but it's the same weight as my Sig 2022 (29oz), so it's definitely a good pick for one. It's got a very slim profile and is surprisingly light for .45cal. Oh, per my wife's request and for my further gun buying sake, I don't carry. If Austin ever started getting as dangerous as the border towns, I'd have no hesitation to do so though.

I have no intentions to carry in Austin itself (unless things drastically change). But a nightstand gun and for times when I venture out into the wild of Texas. I would eventually like to have a carry license.

I vote we hijack this as the CenTex LGC Group unofficial thread. And I advocate moving the discussion about next weekend's 10/13/2012 Lockhart area meetup to here so that it is more localized and doesn't clog up other Texans inboxs with our chatter about how awesome Austin is.
*as a side note, I'm totally stoked for my KR Training Basic Pistol class this weekend and look forward to feeling confident in purchasing a firearm.

Don't want to end up in the news for the wrong reasons. If only more people took the time to get educated about firearms, we'd have a lot less people in the ER and morgue for NDFs. On a lighter note, I am also looking forward to next weekend's meetup. Have we determined a definitely meeting time/place? I'm still pushing for an early day at the range followed by BBQ in Lockhart.
