From Austin here. Simmer down wrote: I'm game to head for the hill country some weekend for some living in tents and shooting. That sounds real good. I go to Eagle Peak in Leander. It's outdoors, has pistol/shotgun/rifle ranges and you can shoot all day for 10 bucks.

Hey, don't they have some real good Bar BQ in Lockhart? I'd be willing to drive to the Lone Star Gun Range near Lockhart if that is what you guys would decide on. provided I get some good Bar BQ in the process. It's about a 3hr. drive from Houston.

I'm a new member in Austin and would like to meet up for an afternoon at the range some time. I won't be available till early August, though. I live in South Austin.

Welcome to the area. I'm always looking for someone to shoot with, although it might be a couple months before I go to an outdoor range again. I was out Saturday morning and the heat was pretty much unbearable by noon.
At any rate, if you need some advice on ranges or gun stores in the area, let me know.

Absolutely and thank you! I've been searching around and am familiar with Red's South and a few other stores, but would definitely like to know where I could go without having to feel the hostility. Red's is fine. Storied Guns seems very friendly. McBride's I've found to be spotty--you don't have to hang out there for long before hearing about Obama taking away our guns. I checked out Central Texas Gun Works because I was hopeful when I saw their web site post something about being Austin's first business with a solar sign, then I go in and see "Piss Off Liberals, Buy a Gun" T-Shirts and stuff about how America, God, and Guns go together blah blah blah. They won't be getting my business, and I'm thinking of telling them why. Any ideas you have, throw them my way whenever's convenient. I'm in no hurry at this point bc I've got other things going on...

I'm in no hurry at this point bc I've got other things going on... As mentioned earlier, I go to Eagle Peak up in Leander. The office where your pay/sign-in has a lot 2nd Amendment propaganda but overall the entire place is fairly apolitical. I've been going there for nearly a year and haven't heard the slightest rumblings of politics. Mostly it's a fun/cheap place to shoot with great RSOs and generally affable patrons. In terms of retail, you're in Texas and can/should expect a large amount of right-wing politics in the mom & pop gun stores. The clerks may lack a huge amount of gun knowledge, but Academy Sports is my general go-to for ammunition, accessories, and firearms. They are by and far the cheapest for ammo and have some good deals from time to time on firearms. The only local establishment I can vouch for is Heritage Firearms. They are a small retailer that uses a co-opted firearms warehouse to keep their prices only 10% over cost. I bought a Ruger P345 from them this past spring, paid 80 bucks under MSRP, and had in my hands four business days after ordering it. The guys running the shop are decidedly no-bull people, so go in there with a purpose and you'll be fine. The best part is that if you order the gun through their website and do in-store pickup, you don't pay for shipping or the FFL fee.

Red's (both north and south) get very busy on weekends with every gun nut and wannabee doomsday prepper coming out the woodwork, most of which wouldn't know the difference in a firearm magazine from People magazine, let alone how to properly handle a weapon without muzzle sweeping the entire range every time they reload.
I can somewhat empathize with the staff being very curt and to the point when it comes to big crowds as the liability is all on their hands coupled with the fact they are dealing with a mostly ignorant, knowledgeable customer.
That said, I've been to Red's North on a Monday and the staff were more than happy to set me up with a lane, make some small talk while things got set up and inside the range, and they didn't even charge me or my friends the full amount owned.
You mileage may very greatly depending on who is working that day and who exactly is on the range with you.

The best BBQ is the one we each of us make at home, or at the outdoors. Then, THE best BBQ is Cooper's BBQ at the Llano, TX, joint: http://www.coopersbbqllano.com/Texas Monthly be damned (spits piss), http://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/top50 We should do a "friendly" Austin vs. D/FW thing. I'm not far past the gun novice stage myself. What I know I learned at summer camp and then in the USAF 25 years ago. But I ALWAYS treat a gun like it's loaded even if the breech is open and I don't point it at anyone, and am always surprised when all these people in the gun stores don't follow that rule.
I live very close to Red's South. Didn't someone go in there a year or two ago, rent a gun, and shoot her(?)self with it?
As for going to Lone Star, I had hoped to take my 15-year-old there and then bbq after (he's a self-styled connoisseur), but my wife won't let him anywhere near my pistol! Sigh, a topic for another day...

Am new to Texas and guns of any sort (have spent some time with cousins/uncles shooting trap and/or trying out a new handgun). I just signed up for the KR Basic Pistol 1 class in early October. Anyone who would like to try to go shooting after that with me (or do some pre-class training) let me know. I'm one of those "damn Illinois transplants".
