It's my understanding that the 2 biggest threats to African wildlife are:

Bushmeat hunting for the market and or starving locals.

Illegal hunting for obscure body parts to be exported for use by non-African traditional medicine, perhaps of dubious merit.

Legal permitted hunting is not really the problem IMHO. If folks can afford to do it; whatever cranks your tractor dude...

It might not be in good taste to face book about your hunt for the negative public image for hunting it creates, regardless of gender. No surprise about the double standard gender bashing for it, though.

I even recall in some hunter education materials that suggest keeping a low profile for the reason of not provoking anti-hunting sentiment.

my $.02.....

Humans have been hunting humans and other species for millions of years. We do it to survive. It's amazing how many people can sit there and listen to ancient history and learn about how humans hunted/killed disabled members of the tribe because they are a slowing down the tribe - putting them in danger - or are never going to be able to be "viable" to the survival of the tribe. Excuse me, but isn't that called "murder"? But we overlook it because it was for survival.

Tribes hunted other tribes for survival of the fittest. Tribes with better hunters (murderers) survived. They would take the women to procreate (rape). Tribes hunted packs of animals. Brought some to extinction or near-extinction. We've done it for millions of years. And not for nothing, we do it in military skirmishes all over the world, and with those secret personnel that we don't talk about at dinner parties.

We euthanize pets that are too old or sick to have a decent quality of life. Every day millions of pets are put to "sleep" because they were too old or sick to have any quality of life. And no one thinks anything of it.

So if some rich dude wants to give a nature preserve a million bucks to let his kid kill off an animal that they are just going to kill anyway, who am I to judge? The animal preserve gets a million bucks to take care of other animals - save ones that are going to assist in repopulating the herd - and scam a guy to part with that extra million he has laying around, who am I to judge? If I had an extra million laying around, I might do something extravagant for my kid too.

My problem with this situation is the censorship. This school exploited this girl for four years. Every time she went on one of these trips she brought back films and photos and experiences that they celebrated. She gave reports to other students about things she experienced -- first hand. When I was in high school one of the girls in my class had divorced parents (not unusual), but what was unusual was her mom was from France. After her parents divorce, she remained in America, her mother went back to France. She spent every summer with her mom. She spent every Christmas with her mom. Her mom took her to places her classmates could only dream about. I don't know what it is like to have a café au lait in view of the Eiffel Tower at age 15. I have never experienced the Louvre.

But she did. And the teachers in our French Language and world history departments had her tell us about her experiences in France. They had her take photos of certain sights she saw. The teachers at this young lady's school were no different. But when it came time for her to use the same photos her classmates saw over the years in blow ups at the front of classrooms, they wouldn't let her use them in the yearbook.

First Amendment anyone? Free speech. They censored her.
First of all, let's call it what it really is...It's not a gun buy-back, because the government never owned them. It's a gun turn in.

We didn't ALWAYS do that, it wasn't integral to our survival as a species, just something some religious bigots made up a few thousand years ago. So that's fairly new. Hunting and meat are what gave humans the protein necessary to grow extremely large brains and cultivate our culture, progress and everything you see around you.
