Bear knocks pistol from hunter's hand

1
Grizzly bear knocks pistol out of hunter's hand in Montana mauling which ends with mule trek to safety

"The bear just flat-out charged us," Mr Sommer said, saying it closed the nine-meter distance between them in three or four seconds.

His hunting partner fired his bear spray, which slowed the bear's charge.

Mr Sommer said he grabbed his own canister so quickly that he couldn't release the safety and he couldn't afford to look down as the bear closed in.

He ran around a tree twice and dropped his bear spray in the process.

Mr Sommer then grabbed his pistol and turned to confront the bear.

He still had his pistol in his hand and was going to shoot the bear in the neck when it swatted his arm down, Mr Sommer said.

"Just like that it stopped," he said. "He stopped biting me, he got up and started to run away."

His hunting partner had been able to fire the rest of his bear spray, ending the attack, which lasted about 25 seconds."

Interesting, and terrifying!
It's long been considered good advice "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" but there's been some new ideas that at a very close range, a skilled knife fighter can deploy and attack before the handgun carrier can effectively act.

I'll try to avoid both.

That's an actual "thing"

it is a big freaking "thing" in the Tactical community / instructors

Good book on knife fighting, any kind of self defense, hand to hand, and close combat pistol ( came out well before Cooper and the "stance" ) so it is either the older school of pistol combat or the OTHER school of pistol combat... it also happens to be the USMC hand to hand combat training manual.. so there is that

Col Rex Applegate and other knife fighting experts William Fairbairn and Eric Sykes have some definite ides bout knives and knife Fighting although these days .. if you know the names at all, you know them from the WW2 commando and fighting knives they designed or the knives used by todays Special Operators

or what I carry https://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/stor ... eries=2323&

Knife fighting is it's own martial art.. as separate from "handgun-do" as it is from fencing

this is the reason the criteria for a respectable draw is 1.5 seconds ..

The contest is between a quick accurate gun draw and a knowledgeable employment of the knife.. ( and you though shot placement counts.. Ha.. know where to stick the knife?). If you read Col. Applegate's book you will find knife fighting is closer to sniping than handgun combat.. and actual military sniping is way more about getting close without being detected than making low probability long range shots, and still being able to get away unseen. .. knife fighting is all about not being seen as a threat while you get close enough for the first incapacitating strike.. knife fighting has a lot more blood and wounds and stuff spraying all over the place than even Hollywood typically shows ... get two magic markers ( different colors) and a buddy .. one marker each.. first one to put a dot right under the sternum wins ( you can vary the target if you want.. the carotid artery or the femoral artery or eve the axillary artery.. the hand flexor muscles , whatever) .. try not to use permanent markers unless you want to start a new body decoration fashion craze .. some call it naked paintball at 3 feet. wear "tightish" clothing that you can afford to mark up ( think paintball clothes) safety glasses always .. if you are real good friends you cn wear the customary minimum of clothes for your relationship.. but it is going to leave a stain no matter what you do.. have multiple colors, so marks from one drill can be distinguished from the next drill

Oh yeah you get to count how many times you cut/ stabbed ( or marked) yourself as your points.. the most points gets the kill.. not unusual for beginners to kill themselves by accident

There are knife fighting lessons on you tube of varying quality .. what is important is learn anatomy, the location of the Arteries, organs, bone that will deflect or stop a strike ect.. tendons or key flexor muscles ect so if you get a clear shot you can put some force behind you use it on something that will give you the greatest advantage as the fight continues or can stop the fight

this is also mix martial you can fist hit or kick use improvised weapons broken bottle on the end of a broom handle or open scissors taped to a broom handle one blade point straight and one at 90 degrees as a spike on a pickax or rock hammer.. grab a trash can lid s a shield ... all very improv and adapting stuff..

One of the main first things to learn is what makes a good fighting knife ( yes, knife fighters say thing like "any knife will do" and "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" " can't believe that turkey brought a gun to a knife fight" ) The experts, Applegate et al, explain why the designed their famous knives the way hey did in a variety of places .. Applegate, in his book for example .. so many knives out there are "fantasy" designs or constructed of the "wrong" maybe "less than optimum" material http://www.zknives.com/knives/articles/ ... lfaq.shtml

excited rant over . I got to go back to typing class now.. record number of typos

You can also ( with a training gun) have your buddy rush you from 21 feet .. if you get your gun drawn and point before he has a hand on your neck.. you win.. switch and you rush him

Yeah, the title also immediately reminded me of that experiment done by Sergeant Dennis Tueller for attacker with a knife closing distances.

But I think the real take away is, "Don't f*ck with bears." Maybe also, "Don't go uninvited to a bear's house (carrying beef jerky)."

The hubris of city-slickers for imagining they should always occupy the top of the food chain leads to this. Really, if a Native American or woodsman living in sync with nature were to wander into the woods, they would likely be exercising much more caution out of basic respect for the larger, stronger animals who live there.

But yeah like my 5th grade teacher told me, "Don't bring beef jerky unless you have enough to share."
"It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of non-violence to cover impotence. There is hope for a violent man to become non-violent. There is no such hope for the impotent." -Gandhi

It's nice to be right for a change! A lot of knives are small enough not to be perceived as a threat--you don't need to carry a Crocodile Dundee ("Now THAT's a knife!") or K-Bar to be able to deploy it. My favorite is a Leatherman Skeletool, but I also like Spiderco and Berettas. The Skeletool opens nearly instantly but it's also a Leatherman, with limited but the useful tools.
