Hi guy's,
Im looking to start hunting turkey this upcoming spring but want to know if my maverick 88 (12 gauge and 20 inch barrel) can be used for the job or if I should invest in a different gun.
Thank You!
Re: Hunting with a maverick 88
2Probably want a little more barrel and a lot more stock, but sure, 12 gauge will definitely kill a turkey.

3Thank You! Any recommendations on barrel length and stock type?Marlene wrote: Sun Dec 09, 2018 10:22 am Probably want a little more barrel and a lot more stock, but sure, 12 gauge will definitely kill a turkey.
Re: Hunting with a maverick 88
4At least 26". Thumbhole stocks are good for turkey hunting as you generally shoot from sitting and they help take the sting out of the very heavy recoil of turkey loads.

5I was being a bit facetious. I mixed up the Maverick with the Shockwave in my head. Your stock is fine and Mason is right about 26" barrel. They make choke tubes called "turkey tubes" as turkeys have some pretty heavy feathers and you really have to hit them hard to get through.

7Head/neck. Turkey hunting is hard. And cold.

8Turkeys wear their own flack jackets.
You hear funny stories of how they can take a solid load of bird shot enough to blow them off their feet, get up and shake the lead pellets out of their feathers.

As far as turkey hunting based on your questions I have feeling that you have not completed Hunters ED or it has been a long time ago and turkey hunting was not your thing. at any rate, brushing up on Hunters ED would be recommended.
Once again welcome.
Re: Hunting with a maverick 88
11Any Mossberg 500 barrel will fit your Maverick, so you may want to look around eBay or GunBroker. I have a 500 with a factory extra-full choke, and it is plenty for turkey at any reasonable range. It is helpful to take some large paper/cardboard pieces and a few different turkey loads to the range and see which patterns best. YouTube is your friend for this if you've never done it before.
Re: Hunting with a maverick 88
12You want a full or turkey choke, longer barrel preferred. Aim for the wattle or where the neck feathers start (I've heard both ways). Ideally, pattern your choke and load ahead of time.
Re: Hunting with a maverick 88
13There are a lot of old Mossberg 500 barrels that do not use choke tubes. I don't see barrel length benefitting you much more, but the tight choke will help a lot.
I like #2 shot for Turkey, and aim for the head & neck, not the body.
