Hi From Bama

1
Hello Everyone,

I am enjoying reading through the forum and getting to know each of you. I live in Alabama, am member of Democratic Socialists of America, and just learning about the world of guns. Though I grew up hunting with a 410 and have deer hunted a couple of times with a rifle, I need to learn how to shoot more accurately with a handgun. I have a Ruger LCP and a Taurus Slim 9mm. I also have a Taurus Judge that's my varmint gun. I'm shooting low and to the right and trying to correct that but its hard to correct it on the LCP. I carry everyday now and want to make sure that I can use it if I need to and use it without putting anyone in danger. I look forward to good discussions in the future.

Welcome, neighbor! Isn't it fun being liberal in a red state?

This is a big tent. I hope you learn a lot and share your experiences.

Welcome jeddyrocks!

Sounds like you might fit in nicely here.

As for your shooting low right, check out this chart:

It provides general guidance on what you might be doing wrong. Of course, if you're like me you'll be doing several things wrong at once, but I like these kinds of charts because if nothing else, every time I look on it for a diagnosis of a bad shot I get a reminder of some aspect of correct technique.

I constantly get lazy and shoot right. My trigger finger gets tired and I start using the knuckle. A chart like that helps.

Great stuff, Eris!

Hi jeddyrocks,

Welcome from the Free State of Nevada.

I liked the correction chart - but how do I correct when they are all over the place :-)

My shooting coach says I need to keep my eyes open, but with that really loud noise and the flash ...

:welcome: Eris' chart is great, there are separate ones online for right, left and one handed shooting. LCP is small and snappy it's hard to shoot, maybe rent or buy and practice with a full size handgun.

in general, the larger the cartridge and the smaller the gun, the more difficult it is to control. but large guns are less concealable and small cartridges are less effective. so you've got a trade-off. every person has a particular point where the two lines (controlability/effectiveness)cross. shooting a lot of different guns will help you find that point. there's no harm in training with a heavier gun in a smaller caliber except that that's unlikely to be the gun you actually want to carry/use, but it will help you learn good shooting habits. can you afford a "spare" training gun? then go for it.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?

Welcome. I was in the same boat when I first started. Is it possible you are “compensating” for the load bang? I think that was my issue. Obviously technique will improve, but pushing the barrel forward slightly when you are guessing at the bang might be a possible issue.

Howdy and :welcome: from Oregon!

As some others have said, shooting a small gun well is challenging, probably more so if you are not already experienced with pistols. A full size gun would help as you develop fundamentals, and practice, too. Lots of good information here from members. Also check out our Competition and Marksmanship Forum, and How To Forum.

Again, Welcome!
