He did say that money & gold turned next to worthless in a short time. Your potatoes are no good if you don't have enough friends with guns and ammo to defend them from looters.

It is a pretty dark story. If you have something that others desperately need, they will not hesitate to take it from you by force. What stops them is (a)You carefully hiding your possessions, and (b)You and your friends with guns and ammo.
Glad that federal government is boring again.

You can also make vodka which you can use for trade, medicine, fuel, or as a sleep aid.

About those potatoes.. store bought potatoes won't grow , they are treated with a sprouting inhibitor or in some cases irradiated to increase shelf life and but down on green patches on the potato https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine

How bad is it http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/greenpotatoes.asp on the other hand http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-cult ... h-3162870/

There are ways to get treated potatoes to sprout.. do a google search some folks swear you just plant them other folks have a variety of tricks and counter treatments.. store bought potato's are not certified disease free, plant disease not people disease.
proper seed potatoes are.
Here are the caveats .. very low chance of introducing a potato disease or blight.. but once you have it, the soil is infected forever and any potato from the soil definitely has it and will definitely spread it.

Home gardeners, gardening for fun or as a hobby don't really have to concern themselves with max yields .. growing food in a survival situation it becomes a little more important.. whatever you situation couple practice crops and proper soil testing is the second biggest yield booster.. the biggest yield booster for any crop .. Is at least 5 years of building up the soil value.. it almost doesn't matter what crop you grow aside from the basic acidity factors and the location.. drainage and sunlight being appropriate to the crop.. And the seed itself, hybrid does not breed true and you will have a high percentage on sterile seed.. if you are storing seed for SHTF and it's hybrid.. you face two problems.. with appropriate inputs , aka fertilizer , you can get higher yields but without the right inputs you will get a lower yield than open pollinated .. and the follow on years will each be progressive lower yields and stranger varieties as the hybrid plants attempt to devolve into past parentages.. because of this folks usually just say you can't save seed from hybrid plants.. it's really more a matter of not being with the effort.

Open pollinated and organic sustainable farming is all abut long term soil development/

Here is a more comprehensive survival during shtf blog .. Fer Fal has been at it for at least 20 years as far as I know and Fer Fal and I have crossed paths on various forums over the years http://ferfal.blogspot.com/

There is no point in using any gold and silver to trade with unless you know enough about it and are prepared to take gold and silver in trade.. There is significant skill set involved .. and Just for starters .. if you know anything about the cash 4 gold type places.. just to wake you up .. check out what these guy pay http://www.midwestrefineries.com/ and these guys http://www.apmex.com/category/10002/gol ... opulardesc if you notice, there buy back price is often over spot.. and yes there are certain minimums of the dollar size of your sell back to get the best price and they are quoting their best price But think of all the people who sell for 25 cents on the dollar to a cash for gold storefront.. and that is just scratching the surface.

I strongly recommend that you either get set up to trade both ways in precious metals and acquire the skill to do so.. or just wait it out as best you can and use your gold and silver to rebuild you life when the light come back on.. Fer Fal's advocacy of using personal jewelry is where he and I part ways.. even the plainest gold ring is going to be marked up at least 100% an that up front premium you will never get back ad you will take a significant hit of the precious metal content on top of that.

Another thing to look at.. the seed selection in he vault of seed shtf 20,000 seed supply Spinach is 7 calories a cup .. most the seeds are salad greens very few staples ... It is a problem across the board in the survival food industry The WISE food buckets average out to around 800-900 calories a day.. A #10 Mountain House can, can have as little a one days food value based on a 2000 a day diet.. average is around 2 days... rarely 3.5 days

And if it gets down to where a can of Russian spam can get you woman.. usually a mother.. instead of being a monster.. and basically committing rape with a can of spam pointed at her head .. be hero and just jack off instead and just give her the spam instead of making her debase herself. maybe you will still be able to respect yourself in the morning. If you could afford to spend it to get laid, you certainly can afford to give it away to keep you humanity.

Folks.. at some point the canned food is going to run out.. You will need to be able to live off the land, or grow you own or hunt, trap, and fish.. All of which require certain amount of Practiced skill, the sooner the better, the more the better. If you just plan on living off stored food ( and you can't buy more), congrats, you starve to death last.. you win.

Pre-industrialized agriculture... Typically one person could feed themselves and 2 or 3 more.. with a horse.. maybe themselves the horse and 4 maybe 5 more ... If you are blessed with horse specific Ag equipment you can add a couple more people or start looking at trading excess.. large dogs, have dog specific Ag equipment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_animal Washing machine butter churn cart A dog can safely pull it's own weight or carry 1/4th it weight a horse can pull about 700 pounds if kept in good shape and is properly shod https://www.amazon.com/Unsung-Hero-Hors ... B00ESJ6H56 about that fishing.... every state publishes fishing advisory https://oehha.ca.gov/fish/advisories this is California's.. I'm not going to try and untangle CA format for you.. every state has their own format, every body of water, how polluted, and with what.. every species of fish, and how much of that kind of fish from that body of water it s safe to eat per week or per month. Already did my hunting Blurb .. trapping I get my stiff here https://www.fntpost.com/.. Where to start learning which plants are safe to eat and how to recognize them http://www.eattheweeds.com/ he has mde hundreds of videos to go with the written material https://www.youtube.com/user/EatTheWeeds

You could also do what I do.. I Have a couple kilowatts/Hrs of solar panels and several hundred amps of serious battery bank and a large selection of Ag equipment.. that runs off rechargeable battery packs

Somewhere there is a kinky Internet forum for that.
I am so not googling that.

Prepper metals always seem to be about stockpiling gold. Kinda hard to make change for Double Eagle when buying a jar of mayo...

"Junk silver coins" usually make a bit more sense. Especially dimes & quarters.

Everybody recognizes it, better than trying to prove bullion. Denominations are easier to handle in the day-to-day transactions, and it is hard to fake.

Maybe keep a bit of Au around for that final bug-out plane ride to Costa Rica....

Buying freeze-dried food at a Mormon store or Honeyville can set you up to eat well for a long time, and make sure to stock up on things you really like, not just the basic beans 'N wheat.

Fuel. Propane lasts forever. I've easily run Diesel after 10 years storage. Gas just won't last for long, even with preservative.

Drugs & med supplies.

We all know about the guns & fodder.

Jus' thinkin' about soft warm fuzzies...

OK, I have read tons of prepper stuff. This is the first time I have heard this. Brilliant!!!

Propane lasts forever. So does kerosene. A 55 gallon drum in the basement or crawl space could keep an oil lamp lit for a long, long time.

Bosnia is one of my favorite go-to survival lessons. It was recent (1990s) and in Europe, so when things went bad they went bad in ways we can relate to (a modern city under siege, etc).

Try the Sarajevo Survival Guide site. It's meant to be at once humorous (written in the style of a tourists travel guide) but full of insights on people's everyday struggle to survive in a city without power and water...for years.
