Ok, I admit being ignorant of the various differences, I know that there is a one directional compatibility between the rounds on the AR platform.
Can I shoot 5.56NATO in a single shot 223 TC?
Re: 223 Remington on a Thompson Contender
2If it chambers easily, go for it.
Theoretically, it could be a little tight, but that's unlikely in reality. Pressures could be a hair higher than spec, but nothing to worry about in that gun. If its a noticeably tight fit in the chamber, then maybe not, as neck clearance is important.

3Here's a good summary of the issues. But, as this article points out, millions of 5.56 rounds have been fired in .223 chambers without a single documented incidence of catastrophic failure. If you get flattened primers, then you are looking at a combination of gun and ammo that exhibits the effect mentioned here.

When only cops have guns, it's called a police state.

I have been for over twenty years. But it actually depends on your individual chamber. My pistol will reliably chamber the NATO rounds, but my carbine will not accept about 30 % of them.
