Column: In Rauner's gun proposal, politics comes ahead of policy
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is trying to put those who want sensible gun laws on the spot.

The Republican governor wants them to decide what is more important — keeping assault weapons out of the hands of mass killers or upholding the state’s complete ban on the death penalty.

While the question is posed to members of the Illinois General Assembly, the response likely will reverberate across the country as Americans engage in a fight over assault weapons used in a series of deadly mass shootings.

The death penalty for mass killers and people who kill police in exchange for the following is a bridge too far? But...it's the sacred compromise...
The revised firearms bill that Rauner offered Monday includes several proposals that gun control advocates have long been begging for. The 72-hour cooling off period to buy an assault weapon is in there. So is a complete ban on the sale and possession of bump stocks and trigger cranks used to make guns fire more rapidly.

In addition, the bill grants courts the ability to remove guns from people who are deemed dangerous and requires judges and prosecutors to explain decisions on plea agreements that result in the release of habitual gun offenders.

And it includes seeking funds to hire mental health workers for schools, a move that certainly would appease African-American and Hispanic communities where young people are primarily suffering the emotional toll of violence.
Hmm...I guess maybe compromise isn't what's really wanted, huh?

Guns.com: Rauner signs 2 gun control bills, says will again veto dealer licensing plan
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed laws stretching waiting periods and allowing for gun seizures in so-called “red flag” cases but vowed to reject a measure adding red tape to federally licensed gun dealers.

Approved by the Republican on Monday was SB 3256 to institute a 72-hour waiting period for all guns sales and HB 2354 which establishes a process to seize guns from those considered at risk to themselves or others. The Governor painted it as a win for public safety.

“Today I signed legislation to keep firearms out of the hands of those who would use them to commit acts of violence against themselves or others after proof is provided,” said Rauner on the seizure bill...
