And it IS a Class 3 item when sold legally. However, those "cleaning solvent trap adapters" are all over eBay. Technically they are still legal as such (notice, still) but who the hell would bother instead of just using a rag?

However, shoot with your "solvent trap" on and you have just committed a federal felony.

Reminds me of those glass "tobacco pipes" sold at every gas station

Sure, but in the video, Hickok said that the Econo Can wasn't taxed. Perhaps that changed very recently.

Watch it again - at around 5.35 he says that you DO have to pay the $200 tax stamp but that the adapter itself is only $75.

Also, from the manufacturer's website:
The Econo Can Suppressor comes as a complete unit with the oil filter attached, serial numbered and registered with ATF/NFA.

If or when you need to change the filter out, the ATF/NFA rules says it needs to come back to the original manufacture, which Cadiz Gun Works is. The cost is $25.00. The complete Econo-Can Suppressor can be shipped directly to us, for gunsmithing, which would be replacement/rehab/repair of the oil filter, with the serial # remarked, and documented as being replaced/rehabbed/repaired. The completed Econo Can Suppressor can be sent back to you at your address on your NFA Tax Stamp Form. You do not need to go though a dealer for gunsmithing services. The life of the oil filter varies depending on caliber used and bullet type. (ex. AR15=300-500 rds)
So you CAN'T just go to Autozone and pick up a new filter even if you have the legal, registered, taxed adapter - not legally anyway. Will most people do it anyway? Probably. Will they get away with it? Probably - but technically they are committing a federal felony by doing so.

Personally, I'd rather pay extra and have a real suppressor - one that doesn't block my sights either

They sell the adaptors on amazon also. But honestly if you are mechanicaly inclined making one with some round stock and a couple dies wouldnt be all that hard. Its not like we are talking about really weird thread sizes. Hell most maintenance shops at plants generally have the tools and supplies available. Probably 20 minutes with a pipe machine and a drill press. If the intent is there ingenuity will take over.
