I'm curious what you've heard about 10 mm. It was designed as an "ultimate manstopper" caliber for the FBI, but was quickly eclipsed in law enforcement by .40 S&W. Today, 10 mm is mostly a niche caliber for those who really want to hunt with a Glock.

Shootability, availability, affordability, and tradition all favor .45. When I get a 1911, it will be a .45. If I ever feel the need for a 10 mm, it won't be a 1911.

IIRC, some smaller agents couldn't manage the recoil of full-house loads so the cartridge was down-loaded & eventually the 40 S&W came to replace it.

Stick with .45 ACP on a 1911 frame. If you need to hunt with a pistol, get a purpose-built 10mm, like a Glock 20.

Let us know what you end up getting. I've been lusting after a 1911 myself, but I'm a little up in the air about which one.

Only go with a 1911 in 45 acp as John Browning and the gods intended.

I think 45 acp and 10mm are very different rounds with different philosophies.

45acp is one of the best (if not the best) close combat caliber. If you're in the same room with someone, 45acp is more than enough gun for the fight.

10mm is really closer to a 41 mag than a 45acp. It was designed, as folks here have said, as "the ultimate man stopper." It shoots large chunks of lead at near-magnum speeds. It shoots flatter and straighter than a 45acp and has enough knock-down power to put someone down at 30yards+. It will also punch through softer cover like car doors with ease and even if you get hit in a bullet proof vest, you are still going to have a very bad day.

That said, it was too much gun for the FBI's needs and now, like the 41mag, is really a niche caliber.

That is exactly what happened. It's also why the 40 S&W is called the 40 short and wimpy.

I bought a base-model steel frame Witness 10 mm last winter. I enjoy shooting it (although I'd probably enjoy the twice-as-expensive Stock models more), but I don't shoot it as much as my revolvers, mainly because it's hard to keep it fed. I didn't buy much brass, and I've lost about a third of it despite using a brass-catcher. Every other caliber is laying on the ground for the taking, but not 10 mm brass. That is my main complaint.

But if you want to cultivate an image as the loner weirdo, 10 mm seems like a good place to start (and I guess .400 Corbon would be the place to stop).
