Shootability, availability, affordability, and tradition all favor .45. When I get a 1911, it will be a .45. If I ever feel the need for a 10 mm, it won't be a 1911.
IIRC, some smaller agents couldn't manage the recoil of full-house loads so the cartridge was down-loaded & eventually the 40 S&W came to replace it.
