.22 Mag test data now posted at BBTI

Hey folks,

Just a note to share: the beginning of this month we conducted the full slate of .22 Mag (.22 WMR) tests - both the chop tests and the real world gun tests. And this evening all that data went live on our website: http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/22mag.html

If you happen to see an error, or have questions, please drop me a note and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. Thanks!

I really like the page. A lot of people should view the page. Most 22 WMR data only covers a few manufacturers, ammo not in production or only covers pistols. I really want to try the Vmax on coyote and fox. Both are getting to be pests around here. A possibly rabid fox is terrorizing a local bike path now. Naturally you can't hunt that area with a firearm of any kind.

Energy graph is up now too. So that 6" SA using the Mag cylinder is looking pretty convincing as a self defense gun in a pinch. 4" looks like the minimum for SD work and 2" might as well be 22lr, I see no advantage. Even the 4" barrel running around 160ft/lbs is going to have very good penetration, likely a through shot if it's the likely frontal shot. Great coyote setup.

Bill Jordan suggested the .22mag for a backup round. This suggests it will probably penetrate fine, but no better out of a small gun than a .22lr.
When only cops have guns, it's called a police state.
I carry due to toxic masculinity.......just other people's.

That's much the same set of conclusions I came to, Antiquus, once we got the energy graphs worked out and posted. I've got a longish article for Guns.com which should run soon in which I go into further detail, but here's an excerpt/summation:
Bottom line

For me, the take-away lesson from these tests is that the .22 Mag is a cartridge which is best served out of rifle barrel. At the high end we were seeing velocities which were about 50% greater than what you’d get out of a similar weight bullet from a .22lr. In terms of Muzzle Energy, there’s an even bigger difference – 100% or more power in the .22 Mag over the .22lr.

But when you compare the two on the low end, out of very short barrels, there’s very little if any difference: about 10% more velocity, perhaps 15% more power. What you do notice on the low end is a lot more muzzle flash from the .22 Mag over .22lr.
