.44magnum Buffalo Bore 340gr +P+ and more!

1
Thought I'd share a blog post I just put up, doing some informal tests of different .44 Special and .44 Magnum ammo today. "Informal" in comparison to the usual BBTI protocols, but still pretty insightful. This was prompted by my picking up some of the Buffalo Bore 340gr LFN +P+ ammo, and being curious how it would perform.

I do love BB Ammo. Of all the boutique ammo makers, they seem to have the best real world grasp on what they're doing and that translates to getting the velocities they claim and the energy they claim out of real world firearms rather than test barrels. Good stuff. Wish they made some in 7.7 Japanese 8-)

Yeah, only one 44mag lever action made the C&R exempt list and it's a Browning copy of the Winchester '92

And only one .357 lever action...a Winchester 94.

There must be SOME 357 lever guns coming-up on their 50-year anniversary, given the popularity of both the cartridge and cowboy arms during the 50s/60s, but I have yet to see one.

I'm thinking the one found is a good indicator that it will be about 10 years before 44mags start hitting the C&R market. :(

I must admit - I was impressed. Whenever we've tested the BB ammo, it has always stood up to their claims. But *DAMN* that was something! 1300 foot-pounds out of my revolver? I'd have no qualms taking that out to hunt boar ... or just about anything else on the continent.

The problem with lever action rifles or any rifle with a tubular mag is they don't feed the big heavy for bore loads reliably. I imagine the cost for 100 rds of Buffalo Bore would come very close to covering the cost of a reloader system.

Even some handguns can't load it. Not because of the pressure, but the OAL of the cartridge. It is just a wee bit to long, works in the guns they say because the cylinders are longer. That is also why the leverguns won't cycle

For the photo of the revolver vs. rifle on the steel cans, were the cans shot while full of water, or is that just with air inside?

Cool stuff. I'm going to have to add this subforum to my regular reading list!
