A guy has a deal on a single 7 in the caliber. Anybody shooting it? Anybody reloading for it?
For some reason, I am intrigued by this little round. Wish S&W made an L Frame in this round...
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
2I had the sp101. Shouldn’t have let it go. Were it not for the restriction on magnums, it’s be the perfect gun for tagging that 100 yard plate on the slosa pistol line.

What's it like to reload?
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
4Same as any straight pistol case. Easy. Be extra observant of seating depth issues because you’ll be loading that thing stinking hot
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
5By all means, buy it! A screaming round. If you are reloading, I invite you to consider the Lehigh/Underwood .32 Xtreme Cavitator bullet. (I have seen one person on this forum that does this, don't remember who). With the ammo being thinner, you can store more in less space, making it easier to carry more rounds. Also, more rounds can be fitted into a revolver cylinder. Just image a S&W 686 plus with a 10 round cylinder!!!!
Henry makes a levergun in 327 fed mag. How cool is that?

Tuff products has Quickstrips for 327 (6 or 8 round)

Re: 327 Federal Magnum
6I've been looking for a gun to introduce new shooters and have been considering a 617 K Frame 22lr revolver (I don't do pistols). But even Smith's rimfire trigger doesn't compare to a good centerfire trigger. Loaded-down to 32 acp levels, I think these might be a good alternative. And I like what I am reading about the 327 LCR, which might make a good carry gun for me.
I think I need to rent a 617 and decide if it meets the bill. If not, I might consider getting into this caliber.
I've been eyeing that Henry BTW...

7You could start them on 32 longs, then step up to 32 H&R magnumsenorgrand wrote:I've been looking for a gun to introduce new shooters...
Me too. I would have already bought it, I just don't like a feed tube where you have to put your hands and fingers up by the barrel to reload. But it is a really nice rifle.senorgrand wrote:I've been eyeing that Henry BTW...

8Coincidence - I've been researching this round all weekend and am getting the bug. Besides the 3 regular Single Sevens, Lipsey's recently released the new Single Seven Birdshead with fixed sights and 3.75" barrel
But then there's the 8 shot BlackHawk. Decisions...

11Looks like about half a pound. I think I'd rather have a longer barrel than an extra shot for that amount of weight.foghorn wrote:I'm trying to get an idea of the size difference between the Single 6/7 and the Blackhawk.
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
12Probably something I need to try on for size. The other consideration is 327 BH aren't made these days. Might be late for that party.

I need to look up some 327 loads and see what powders would also work for 357. That way, I only need to add bullets.
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
14Handloader this month has an article on reloading that round in magnum. P. 18.

16ooohh lala!
So many guns, so little ____... There are also some other birds head grips in the vaquero line in your usual revolver magnums +45 LC.
I would consider modifying a user Ruger single action to look like that. I don't like the way the "cowboy" grip looks like, although I understand that it is a functional shape based on what works for single action shooting.

17Marlene: how did the Sp101 trigger compare to say a S&W 617? I've never shot that Ruger.
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
18It's a awesome round never really built the heat they where hopen but is making a come back as Henry now make a lever in 327 mag now so you can have a rifle and side arm. But I wouldn't take that setup in the bear woods.

20I've been looking at one of those 327 Henry lever guns. Just found out this afternoon that it sold. I am both sad and happy. Nice gun, I just didn't need it.zzrguy wrote:It's a awesome round never really built the heat they where hopen but is making a come back as Henry now make a lever in 327 mag now so you can have a rifle and side arm. On the other hand, I would definitely take it in bear country. If it turned out to not be enough, I'd just cut a switch and wear his ass out.

Re: 327 Federal Magnum
21Whoa there partner.. bear country.. I have two 327 mags love them.. but we are talking an impressive small pistol cartridge .. even out of a rifle length barrel
An M1 Carbine at 100 yards is more potent than a 357 that's 3 5 7 at the muzzle and an M-1 carbine has never been recommended for bear , well, not by anybody still living.
http://guide.sportsmansguide.com/ballis ... carbal.htm
typical 357 ballistics from a 18 inch barrel
http://www.gunnersden.com/index.htm.357-magnum.html
that's less than a .223 http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/223rifle.html http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/2011 ... 223ME.html
a 327 mag is in the same general levels as a .223 out of a rifle length barrel http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/327mag.html http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/megraphs/327mag.html
The problem you are up against is pistol powder burning up to fast and the extra barrel length being more about friction than providing more power stroke and the worse ballistic co-efficient of the bullet bleeding velocity faster and starting slower .. even if it is heavier ... it's mass ( a linear relationship ) times velocity squared ( a more logarithmic relationship)
Don't go around annoying bears, carry bear spray or enough gun to get'er done

Cool. For the same price as a 617, I can get the SP101, plus dies, bullets and brass.
It uses standard small pistol primers, yes?
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
24Marlene; what bullets did your SP101 like? I'm thinking I'll get some cheap lead bullets for plinking and some jhp I can turn into real screamers. I was thinking 100 grains for both.
Re: 327 Federal Magnum
25It liked everything. Even lightly loaded hollow base wadcutters, which I did with Trail Boss.
