CIA says Russia hacked to help Trump win

1
A shocking secret CIA assessment has concluded that Russia interfered with the U.S. presidential election expressly to help Donald Trump win, according to an exclusive report Friday by The Washington Post.

Until now, intelligence sources have indicated that Russian hacking throughout the campaign that repeatedly exposed information overwhelmingly embarrassing for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was an effort to undermine Americans’ faith in their government.

Now the intelligence community has concluded that Russia was clearly after a Trump victory and manipulated information to that end, according to sources who spoke to the newspaper.

“It is the assessment of the intelligence community that Russia’s goal here was to favor one candidate over the other, to help Trump get elected,” a senior U.S. official briefed on the CIA assessment told The Washington Post. “That’s the consensus view.”

The Trump camp has dismissed the report — along with the credibility of the U.S. intelligence community. “These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction,” said a statement by the Trump transition team. “The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s time to move on and ‘Make America great again.’”

(The claim that Trump had won one of the “biggest Electoral College victories in history” is simply not true. He ranks 44th out of 54 electoral votes of presidents since the 12th Amendment passed, Mother Jones reports.)

It’s no surprise Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted Trump in the White House. Trump praised the former KGB leader throughout the presidential campaign. He even called Putin a “more effective leader” than President Barack Obama.

Now he is pissing off the CIA and the rest of the intelligence community. He is taking only one intelligence briefing a week instead of daily.

I guess he is getting the rest from Putin.

The New York Times broke the story:
American intelligence agencies have concluded with “high confidence” that Russia acted covertly in the latter stages of the presidential campaign to harm Hillary Clinton’s chances and promote Donald J. Trump, according to senior administration officials.

They based that conclusion, in part, on another finding — which they say was also reached with high confidence — that the Russians hacked the Republican National Committee’s computer systems in addition to their attacks on Democratic organizations, but did not release whatever information they gleaned from the Republican networks.

It is possible that in hacking into the Republican committee, Russian agents were simply hedging their bets. The attack took place in the spring, the senior officials said, about the same time that a group of hackers believed to be linked to the G.R.U., Russia’s military intelligence agency, stole the emails of senior officials of the Democratic National Committee. Intelligence agencies believe that the Republican committee hack was carried out by the same Russians who penetrated the Democratic committee and other Democratic groups.

The finding about the Republican committee is expected to be included in a detailed report of “lessons learned” that Mr. Obama has ordered intelligence agencies to assemble before he leaves office on Jan. 20. That report is intended, in part, to create a comprehensive history of the Russian effort to influence the election, and to solidify the intelligence findings before Mr. Trump is sworn in.

NYMag has a good article on the whole mess. Seems that the Turtle didn't want to come out of his shell but want to put party before country when briefed about the Russian hacking along with other GOP Legislative Lounge Lizards. They even questioned the intelligence report bringing up WMD that was propagated not by the CIA but Darth Cheney. GOP is the Grab On Power at all cost.

CIA leaders at agency headquarters in Langley, Va., are bracing for a potentially adversarial relationship with Trump’s White House, especially over what the spy agency sees as Russia’s malign role on multiple fronts, according to two officials who requested anonymity in speaking about internal discussions.

“It sets up one of the great crises in the history of the executive branch,” said Glenn Carle, a former senior CIA officer who spent more than two decades as a spy before retiring in 2007. “All the agency can do short of insurrection is to present the facts when allowed to the executive we serve.”

Trump has received only a handful of classified intelligence briefings since his upset victory last month, and CIA officials now believe it is because Trump has rejected their assessments on Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine, its pressure on Eastern Europe and its computer hacks to boost Trump's chances against Hillary Clinton.

Trump has repeatedly said that he doesn’t believe that Russia tried to interfere in the election, has praised Putin and has called for closer relations with the Kremlin.

“I don’t believe they interfered,” Trump said in an interview with Time magazine published this week. The hacking, he said, “could be Russia. It could be China. And it could be some guy in New Jersey.”

Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Burbank), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Trump is not disregarding the intelligence because he has examined the information and disagrees with how it was interpreted. Rather, he said, Trump has rejected it because “it doesn't fit with the political narrative he wants to tell.”

That doesn't bode well for how Trump will act as president. "He is willing to disparage the intelligence community when it benefits him," Schiff said.
