I finished my first lower build! I used that wrench thingy for the castle nut, but no other special AR tools. Took about 60 minutes.
Re: First AR build!
6Sweet. Good call on the grip, I'd like to see how it feels, as I may add one to my AR. I'm tired of futzing with the bullet button.
Re: First AR build!
7Looks a lot less dangerous with that weird grip and non-collapsible stock But hey, got to work with what's allowed, Nice job! The pivot detent went in easy enough?
Re: First AR build!
8I taped the receiver, so no idiot marks. I launched bits into space once.

9Gallon freezer bags work well to contain springs n things when assembling lowers.

Re: First AR build!
10I got to change the retaining plate. It has little sling adapter wings and it makes the hammerhead grip uncomfortable.

11lay a towel over the drain and do it in the shower stall.senorgrand wrote:I launched bits into space once.

Re: First AR build!
12I was thinking a modified appliance box with a light fixture mounted up top and a curtained opening would be a smart idea.
Would need a fan too...or directed a/c vent! Hmmm.....

13I just used a thin blade to hold it down while I installed the pivot. Worked great.senorgrand wrote:I was thinking a modified appliance box with a light fixture mounted up top and a curtained opening would be a smart idea.

Re: First AR build!
14I used the razor blade on that part too.
It was that side latch. Launched it twice. Lost the spring only once though. That was the toughest step and it only took 5 min or so.
Put the hammer spring on wrong and had a devil of a time getting the hammer and trigger to disengage. That took about 10 min to clear up. But a pretty harmless beginner's mistake.
Overall though, it's a pretty easy build. I didn't even use a vice!

Re: First AR build!
17Let me know when you're ready for the part that actually goes bang, if you want to. Any luck on your Sterling mag well search? It might be easier if you liquidate the 9mm mags you have to get Colt/Uzi stick mags instead.

19Ahhhh!senorgrand wrote:Can't liquidate...they are grandfathered pre-ban mags.
Ok, I'll start kicking over rocks to see if I can find a top-in magwell adapter for ya.

23Oh, and I have this baseplate on order: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Arms-Gea ... ar15+plate
You'll want a tear drop base plate with the hammerhead grip.
