Re: Can anyone tell me what this is?

Getting ready to dig into this restoration project and putting together some supplies. I figure any set of heavy duty brass brushes of Cabellas is okay?

Most importantly I guess, what oil should I use? I generally use Hoppes no. 9 and Lucas CLP on my guns but I'm not sure if there is something that would work better and/or be more economical for this purpose. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Marlene! You seem to be the local guru for this, and your help is greatly appreciated!

So this is what I should need:

And some of these in brass:

And some of this?

Ordered, thanks Marlene! I'll update as I clean this thing up and learn more about it. From my initial research I think it's one of the Japanese models, which means my goal is to get it back into shooting order and enjoy it, which I'm super excited about. I was close to buying a 22lr rifle anyway, so working for one like this is going to be even more rewarding :)

Yeah it's getting there! Probably gonna take another 10-15 hours of elbow grease. It's really a nice gun, it's a shame somebody let it get so bad, though it probably wouldn't be in my hands if they hadn't ;) The blueing under the fore is still in immaculate condition, and the internals including the rifling appear to be in fine shape. Even if I can't get it back to "show room" condition I'm excited to clean it up and take it to the range. Probably never would have bought one of these if it didn't fall into my lap, but I'm sure glad it did!

For sure! I have a .22 revolver for plinking and was considering buying a new production Henry .22 for plinking, but this thing just kinda fell in my lap and I honestly couldn't be more stoked about it right now. I have a feeling it's gonna hold a special place in my heart forever considering I got it through my closest friend. Can't wait to get it back into shooting order and take it back up to Gainesville for me and him to do some plinking with.

Holy crap you're right! $700-$1700 for a 22 plinker? I mean yeah, they look nice, but when you can buy a TCR22 for like $200 and a 22 bolt action for even less I just don't see the point.
I'd take yours made in Belgium over any new ones. I hear the Belgium models (FN ! )are very sought after, especially more than the Japanese made ones. And lets not forget it's a break down too. https://gundigest.com/collecting/collec ... auto-rifle

There's some good info in there! Now I'm even more excited to learn more about this thing. It appears that the receiver on mine was grayed instead of blued, which would make it a Grade II. Now I'm wondering if I should just take this thing to a good gunsmith and get it professionally restored. The 22 short models seem to demand a higher price tag, maybe I'll wait for another round of scrub-downs and serial hunting before I make that decision. Still not sure I would part with it even if it was worth big money, though I can't imagine it would be since it's been allowed to rust so badly.

Seems it's difficult to even find the serial numbers on them from my hunting around just now. https://www.browning.com/support/date-y ... rifle.html
No serial number records exist for rifles manufactured at F.N. prior to 1956.
A little easier to figure out then brownings website. http://proofhouse.com/browning/22_cal_auto_rifle.htm

Thanks for the links! I was able to find the serial on the underside of the barrel 6T37***

So it appears it was made in Belgium in 1966 and is indeed the lr model, so maybe worth a few bucks but not many thousands of dollars. Not sure if I'm disappointed that it's not worth big money or happy that I'll be keeping it to enjoy for years to come.
