Ryan forces House Chaplain to resign over balanced tax prayer.

Can’t have balanced prayer in the house.
House Speaker Paul Ryan forced the chamber's chaplain Patrick Conroy to resign, according to a new report from The Hill. While the nonpartisan position is not generally a source of much controversy, Ryan reportedly forced Conroy out for, at least in part, a prayer he offered at the beginning of 2017's tax reform debate that struck the speaker as biased.

"May all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle," Conroy said in a prayer in November, according to The Hill. "May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans."

The tax reform that eventually passed the House was not "balanced" — it is expected to add at least a $1 trillion to the deficit while delivering the largest benefits to wealthy people and corporations.

At least two sources suggested to the paper that this speech, which Ryan saw as partisan, was the reason for his firing. But one Democratic aide also reportedly said that Republicans didn't like when Conroy invited a Muslim to deliver an opening prayer.

Pelosi's office said she objected to the moves to force Conroy out, though Ryan's spokeswoman AshLee Strong denied this.

Democrats were reportedly "shocked" and "furious" Thursday when they heard the chaplain had been forced to leave.

First chaplain ever removed from office. It's not like this is a typical rotation of chaplains. I agree that they should reconsider having a chaplain at all. However, that won't happen at this time. Maybe they want to install Joel Osteen as the new chaplain?

Good article from a Christian perspective:

Christianity is the religion of Jesus, who was himself "political" in that he took sides with the poor, the ill and those who lived on the margins. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus asked his followers to love their neighbors. Someone asked him to define what he meant by "neighbors." "When you give a banquet," he said, without hesitation or equivocation, "invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed." (Luke 14:13)

He said again and again that he came into the world to preach "the good news to the poor" (Luke 4:18). Repeatedly he asked the wealthy to sell their possessions and give the proceeds to the poor (Matthew 19:16-30, Luke 18:18-30, Mark 10:17-31). He cared for the needy himself by feeding them (Mark 8: 1-13). The Sermon on the Mount opens: "Blessed are the poor..." (Matthew 5:3)
It is an unfortunate human failing that a full pocketbook often groans more loudly than an empty stomach.

In Upton Sinclair's 1922 novel "The Call Me Carpenter: A Story of the Second Coming", the moral is...just that. He'd be crucified all over again--as a Socialist.

Actually, a pretty good read, if you can find a copy of it. My dad left me one--Not sure how early an edition it was--maybe a first, but he was a kid then.

Organized religion is a cult by any other name. The Abrahamic religions, today, are the worst in terms of fleecing their adherents for money.

The reality is that Judaism began as a sun worshiping cult in ancient Mesopotamia.

If Washington, Madison, and Jefferson were alive today they would be appalled that congress has to have a chaplain. They would say congress should be celebrating the fact that Jesus was a political rebel just like Washington, Madison, and Jefferson were.
