IMHO, a 500 is great if you plan to do pistol hunting of grizzly bears. Otherwise it is a joke. Have you ever shot one before? If you haven't, go rent one. Shoot a whole box of ammo. if you still want one after that, then go for it.
I see young guys come into the range to rent a 500. They buy a box of expensive ammo and go merrily into the range. After 2 or three shots, they bring it back to the desk and ask to swap it for an AR-15. Many people have shot the ceiling of the range and done enormous damage. They are trying so hard to look tough and able to control the recoil. When they fire, the gun recoils so the barrel is pointing at the ceiling, with your finger still on the trigger, another round is cycled--and fires. If you are lucky the bullet goes into the ceiling, if you're not--then your head is a canoe.

ON the other hand, everything I have heard or read says that the Rhino is delightful to shoot. IT IS NUMBER 1 on my wish list!!!!! Super practical and shootable. Lots of different loads available, great for conceal carry, or target shooting. Get the Rhino.

Get the Chippa Rhino in .357 or another maker .357 revolver.

A S&W 500 is a silly hand cannon that has little use unless you have bears or angry hippos in your back yard, it'll be too expensive to shoot
it's just a novelty. Buy 2 revolvers for what that costs.

The other thing if you really want the S&W 500 and plan on shooting it is to make sure you health insurance covers orthopedic specialist in wrist and elbow injuries along with possible mandibular facial reconstruction.

I guess if you want the biggest handgun you can buy that's the way to go. There's a few guys up here carrying the 500 for bear protection but they don't seem to be terribly popular. I have a .454 Ruger Super Redhawk that I like. Shooting the .454 hurts but with the 45 Colt the recoil is just marginally more than a 22.

If you're planning to shoot a .500 at an indoor range you might want to check on the rules. I know they're not welcome at the indoor pistol range here.

Should you get the 500? Let me answer your question with another question.....do you own a top hat and a monocle? A really cool pocket watch? A tailcoat? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you're ready for the 500. And the most epic photoshoot ever!

I some how feel compelled to chime in on this.

Everyone knows I like expensive toys and everybody loves to share them. The consensuses is correct, everyone will hate shooting it. However, everyone WILL shoot it at least once. They will walk away smiling as they rub their hand and wrist. You will be doing each one of them a service by allowing them to check one off their bucket list. I know it's not as powerful, but I have never regretted buying my Desert Eagle. In fact, I have been toying with the idea of a 500. I just need to check a few other voids off the list first. That said, it is a pain in the ass to add a new caliber to my system. I am up to 16 now and I am running out of space for the ammo cans.

Comparatively, the Deagle is much more pleasant to shoot. I'd buy a Deagle in 50AE before I buy an S&W 500. Granted, I know you're in California so that probably isn't an option.

That said, what's more Californian than a Model 29 in .44 Magnum?

THIS ^ is the most sensible and well-conceived answer so far to the question at hand.

Every now and then I've started having strange cravings for a S&W model 29 either the 6" or 8" variety. My advice is, follow your gut instincts. Get the 500. Shoot it, take pics, and have fun. Pics must include top hat and monocle. Seriously if you want one, get one. I am sure you will find much of the other advice applicable later. If you really like it you'll shoot it every now and then or you'll sell it. One thing is for sure, it won't be your last gun or revolver. I don't recall if I've shot the 500, but have shot a .50 semi several times. It's not something I'd shoot often. I am considering the 44 magnum since that will allow for use of a .44 Special out of the same gun. Want is a hard thing to argue with and sometimes satisfying it is the best approach. It's not like buying a car and having the price drop by half driving it away from the sales lot.

Totally agree. Most shooting fun for the $$$ is a .22. Shoot all day long with not much wear and tear on your body or your wallet.

S&W K-22 will keep on trucking for decades - I've owned mine since 1964 when it was brand new, and put thousands of rounds through the barrel.

The other upshot to used is that 500s generally come with holsters and extra ammo as there is literally no point of keeping the accoutrements.

There's a lot of haggling room when it comes to a one-trick pony like the 500.

I wouldn't even bother with the .460 S&W unless you honestly intend to hunt at 100+ yards with a revolver.

If a .44 Magnum isn't enough for you (after all, it's REALLY only a .43 Magnum!), just get a .454 Casull. Greater supply of guns than the .460, you can buy .45 Colt cowboy loads for plinking, and if you reload, shoot .45 Colt "Ruger-only" loads for when you want something sane but close to .44 Magnum levels. Keep one box of full-on .454 around for when you want to go to eleven. That should be hairy enough, without doing too much permanent damage to your thumb or wrist.

Notice that you can't spell "H110" without eleven. That powder lives up to it's name!
