Pretty cool piece of history- if you like to collect things from the first private army in this country anyway

2It should be in a labor museum.
If I had the cash, I'd snatch it. That gun saw some shit. I wonder if there's blood on it.

Re: 1896 "Pinkerton"
3I'm sure there is, deep in the stock from the beatings applied to the people. And agreed on both counts. Just can't justify it at the moment, even though I do need a shotgun!

6100% true. Would be nice to have hung in a Union shop though, with the inscription, This is why we must be vigilant

11Fortunately to my wife, she thinks they all look the same. Except the Mosin.

12As the grandson of a union carpenter (who also apprenticed me into the trade) AND of a union railroad dispatcher, AND the son of two union teachers I absolutely could not hide this one... I'd have to brag like a mutha about getting the last laugh!

13That's some piss-poor stamping. I would guess they would have a little pride in the work considering they were a big deal.

If that was one of the Pinkerton Krags or a Spingfield 1903A1, it'd make a great 'rifle on the wall' with Orwell's quote on a brass plaque below it. Like a trophy.

15I'd rather have something from blackwater. It's not a trophy if you get it after they're done with it.ErikO wrote:Scabs don't work hard.Simmer down wrote:That's some piss-poor stamping. I would guess they would have a little pride in the work considering they were a big deal.

19Not a $750 shotgun without some authentication. I have a set of the same letter stamps... and a cut down 1897 Winchester...

Firearms. Firearms that have fake railroad markings have been reported. A collector who specializes in both old firearms and railroad history sent us the following comment: "I have seen old firearms that were "sweetened up" by application, later, of markings. This is particularly true of railroad-marked guns where the time period of use of the gun was not consistent with how the gun was marked, say, U.P.R.R. versus U.P.Ry. Same for Santa Fe. It became Ry. in 1896. Years ago, this guy got a bunch of old worthless double barreled shotguns, sawed off the barrels and marked them as Wells Fargo. He even had got some Wells Fargo letterhead and zeroxed a number of copies of the blank forms and then typed in that such and such a shotgun was assigned to, say, the Alberquerque office. They sold at gun shows pretty well till he was exposed and "reasoned with." Gun collectors don't "reason" very gently. Of course, there are fakes made by informed folks who do their homework first and that complicates the process."

The gun is cool, but the Pinkertons suck the big one. Anti union folks make me want to turn my garden over with a pitchfork, to burn up the reagent generated by the thought of anti union Pinkertons...

24I was given the cold shoulder at Baton Rouge Progressive Network because of talking about this....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludlow_Massacre and various other incidents.
They call themselves Progressive but what they don't really mean it. Not once did they ever talk about labor relations, getting together with what little unions we have or the working poor. They would rather beat drums in a circle and right strongly worded opinions articles and hold meetings at places the working poor couldn't afford.
Anyways, I'd love to have that.
