Re: Which 12gauge pump equals a Ruger MKIII 678?

Slightly, but well worth it. The balance is better and the milled receiver will outlast his grand-kids. Personally I love the bottom feed & eject because it drops the hulls right at my feet. A lefty can use it without modification. My 16 gauge was $125. The same place had one in 20 for $250. A 12 goes usually somewhere in between. Newer guns can have interchangeable barrels. Older ones don't have a disconnector

New current made ones are scarce and expensive but if you can find a used one you'll not find a better pump gun.

Totally second the Ithaca. It's a good John Browning design, and they are very plentiful; no need to buy a new one. Great for lefties, too because of the bottom eject. The only pump with a smoother action is the Model 12, but I think the 37 is cheaper and more robust, and still has a great action.
ps. models before about '76-'77 allow 'pump-firing', which is a deliberate design, not a design flaw.
