Choke vents

I keep getting spam ads for choke tubes. I don't have a shotgun for them, but I'm curious: are the slits or holes in many of them intended to vent the propellant gas so it doesn't cause scatter as it blows through the shot column just out of the muzzle? Or let the wad drop off quicker rather than push it into the shot? Or something I haven't guessed?

That does sound fun! The only thing I like about indoor ranges is that they make the cylinder gap flash on my revolvers look more impressive, so this would be in the same vein.
