I have been kicking around the Idea of a hi point 995 9mm since my shoulders can't handle recoil of a large caliber weapon.. Do any of you guys no anything about these guns ? any suggestions on something in a military style..

I have heard mixed things about the Hi Point. Some swear by it and some aren't fans. It's like that with everything. However, the one thing I have universally heard is an issue with magazines. I guess you're limited by the size of a Hi Point mag?
Another option to consider is a Kel Tec Sub 2000. They can be had on Gunbroker for a little under $500 when all is said and done. They're more expensive, but they're such an interesting gun. They come in 9mm or 40 and with either Glock, S&W, or Beretta mags. I opted for the 9mm in Glock to go with my 19 and 34. 33 round mags are relatively cheap and you can have loads of fun.
Two companies are currently making aftermarket parts for the gun. Red Lion makes a lot of the pricier gear, but you get options with sights, rails, and other little things. Tacticool's upgrade parts are almost mandatory. You'll get a superior cheek weld, recoil, and ease of use with the bolt with their gear. Also, Kel Tec have their own little add ons, but I haven't looked into purchasing them. You could easily spend as much as an AR if you let yourself get carried away.

+1 for Sub 2000. I've got the .40 Sig, which kicks a bit more, but is a hoot to shoot.
If you aren't into Glock, the other flavor of Sub is the Sig/S&W/Beretta version. With some parts from KelTec (which they gave to me for free), you can switch the mag catch in about 3 minutes and use mags that work in the Sig P226, Beretta 92 and the S&W (5906?). Same thing in the .40 version.
Also, I got mine for about $350 about a year ago. If you're patient, you can find a decent price on gunbroker.

I really enjoyed having one around the house. I would definitely buy one again. Mechanically, the magazines are the weak link, but with very minor modification, the. 45 ACP versions of the hi point can utilize 1911 mags.
The one my ex has is in 9mm,and is quite a blast to shoot. It is relatively small and compact, being about 30" overall. The balance is almost perfectly centered at the pistol grip... I love them!

Uh oh... We're drifting ever so close to activity based costing here. And the closer we get to activity based costing, the closer I get to picking up my college accounting text book.

I have the Kel-Tec Sub2000 as well, in the 9mm S&W mag style. Senorgrand's post here last year inspired me to get it -- welcome back, SG!
I bought it to shoot in local pistol-caliber carbine matches, which have been a lot of fun.
I haven't seen any Hi Point 9mms at these matches, but one guy brought a Ruger PC-9 and a Marin 9mm Camp Carbine. Both are great carbines that you might find used, but which their manufacturers inexplicably discontinued a few years back. IMHO, they'd sell a buttload of these guns if they started making them again.

Good to hear. I planned on doing this pretty soon myself. Apologies for the threadjacking but... What recommendations would you have for me for using this for local matches? I've already put in all the little things from Tacticool, but I'm debating between rails from Red Lion or Kel Tec. The Red Lion ones are pretty genius, but they're also expensive. I've been using the stock sights at the range and I'm fairly accurate out to about 50 yards or so. I can definitely hit targets out that far and the grouping is fairly consistent.

Definitely check out the Sub2K forum at http://www.thektog.org Lots of good pics and advice about mods there. A lot will come down to personal preference. I prefer open sights, and they work well at the range of my local matches (50 yards). I did replace the factory sights with Red Lion front sight, because I got tired of breaking the plastic parts of the factory front sight when I adjusted it. Other than that, I use the Tacticool bolt tube cover and charging handle, a Handall grip, and a Kel-Tec compact front end and sling. Pretty minimalist. Maybe Senorgrand and our other Sub2K users will weigh in as well.

Thanks. I'll check that out.
I'm just debating how far I'll take this thing. It's a matter of need vs. want, but also a question of how useful it would be. At some point, it makes more sense to buy an AR.
Getting back on point, you should get one of these, Irish.

As long as you don't think you can actually change the upper, put in an insert and have a 9mm AR quickly, cheaply and easily. I tried that route, and it cost me dearly. I now have 2 AR's since I just plain bought another lower and stopped messing around. The 9mm upper will cost you about $380, and the magazine adapter insert is another $150 from Spike. There are cheaper models ($50) but they are useless crap. So when you are done, you spent $550+ for a 9mm conversion kit, you still only have one complete rifle at a time, and you could have bought 2 complete 9mm carabines for the price of the conversion kit alone. A 9mm carabine is not very powerful, averaging 1200 fps, so it is still a close in weapon that does not replace a 223 with 3000+ fps. If you buy an AR in 223, and a 22LR kit for $150, you have a 'real' rifle and a way to shoot cheaply.

It isn't a matter of shooting cheaply. I only shoot outdoor for competitions and spend most of my time at an indoor range. Because of that, I don't really see a point in having an AR. The local two gun matches don't care what you shoot as long as you turn out. That's why the 9mm carbine made sense.
I'm sure I'll breakdown and buy an AR, but I have a lot to do before that.

If you are handy, you can use the KelTec user group thread "Scope Mounting Plans" (sic) for some cheap ways to mount a red dot.
I think I spent $20 all told for a low-profile mount that still lets me fold (and lock) the Sub. Add a red dot with a quick release and you are all set for the price of what you might just spend on a fore-end from KelTec or Red Lion.
I like the feel of the stock fore of the Sub and would rather spend what little money I have on something else.

Crazy thing I did today bought a 10/22 ruger and a 25 shot clip, instead of a 9mm hi point....

You still did fine. The BX 25 clips look good. I'd be interested to hear how they are as I'm looking for one as well. I think Midway has a deal on them, but I'm not sure.

Whatever you do, do not google the phrase 'archangel 10/22' or all future gun money will be spent on your new rifle. After I finish the AR and get my wife her P238 Rainbow, I'll be making a Marauder for sure. http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... CFAQ8wIwAA What's another $140 spent on a .22 rifle?
