Hello,

They are relatively rare. If you can get it for under $350, jump on it!

Even the M44 carbines are going up in price.

The M38 carbines were issued to back-line troops like artillery. Sort of like our M1 Carbine, but more effective, if slower to fire!

These do not accept bayonets.

Of course you'll need a sight for it... :D

Regards,

From what I've heard and seen on YouTube, if you think the regular Mosin-Nagant has a loud report and a big muzzle flash, wait 'til you see those shorter barreled jobs shooting the same ammo!

I got my 1942 Izhevsk M38 for $99 at Big 5 in 2006 or 2007. I like it, though my 91/30 is more accurate. From my perspective, it shoots exactly the same as my 91/30 in terms of recoil and report. My best friend shoots better with it than the 91/30, I'm the opposite. Mileage varies, I guess.

I'd go for it, though. Especially since you've got the 91/30. Might as well have the set.

They're not all that "rare." They are a tad hard to get, but they're out there easily.

Here is a rarity scale:

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRarity.htm

I'm a new guy here, but I have a soft spot in my head for MN's. Or shoulder, one--I have some carbines.

One extra cool thing about the carbines is the muzzle flash at sunset. It is not to be missed.

One not so cool thing is that they're lighter than the longer rifles and thereby deliver more felt recoil. This can be mitigated with a rubber recoil pad. Many exist. The one from tick bite supply that bolts on in place of the metal one works very well (see pic). In conjunction with a LimbSaver strap on pad, a shooter can enjoy a long day with no discomfort. Well, not all that much any how.

They shoulder really well.

Here is one of my builds. I made it on a cut m91 barreled receiver I got at a gun show for $10. It took some time and money to accumulate the rest of the parts.

For those odd few who mess around with old and moldy bolt guns, here is the entire story of the build so no one thinks I have the most uber rare MN evah:

The barrel must've been cut back in the day when it was new. EVerything is uber sharp in there. It shoots very well.

There are four or six finger-jointed Sako 91-39s on the rack at my LGS. In the $350 range. I'll pick the best one and bring it to Portland if you like.
