Welcome to Washington, for some it's the ‘state of denial’

At the state level, Democrats still control the Legislature and Jay Inslee will be the next governor.

On Saturday, a retired man wondered aloud, “How could anyone who owns guns vote for people who have repeatedly tried to restrict gun rights?”

After a day at the Washington Arms Collectors gun show, one might ask, “How, indeed?”

So this column has a reasonable question for gun owners who voted for Mssrs. Obama and Inslee, Sen. Maria Cantwell and other anti-gun Democrats. What is it about these folks other than the “D” behind their name that earned your vote?

OK, I doubt Dave Workman is sincere about wanting to hear from Pro-Gun Liberals, but he threw down the gauntlet.

I posted a ridiculously long rant, and I expect to mostly get 1 to 3 sentence replies of "Communist!", "Socialist!", "Fascist!" and sometimes all 3.

I had the same questions, until I had my consciousness raised at the LGC meeting in Portland.

It's one thing to say, "These people may want to restrict my gun rights," but it's a whole different ball o' wax when the opposing party wants to de-legitimize and criminalize something as personal and fundamental as who you choose for your life-partner.

I'm straight, I always have been, and that's that. But the very thought of victimizing an entire class of people based only on who they sleep with, and that targeting being nothing more than a political 'cheap shot' against a marginalized and vulnerable population, is repugnant in the extreme.

I will fight against those who would enslave others to my last breath.

I love the shooting sports but I can see them becoming extinct in the not too distant future. The association of RKBA and conservatism will doom the sport. Moderates and liberals who would be attracted to the sport won't become involved. Why should they? I grew up with guns but gave them up for a while. I missed shooting so I bought a Thompson Contender and was going to join a gun club. They were politically conservative and expected members to be in lock step (How those who preach freedom demand obedience). I sold the Contender. Now I am back. A proud liberal gun owner
My wife, who works in women's health and has had experience with rape victims thinks most conservative are (fill in the blank -------). When I bought my pistol she let me know she wanted nothing to do with it. I read her quotes from this forum, etc. and she realized there are many who would agree with her. She wants to go out shooting and now is the proud owner of a 22 Marlin semi-auto. (She liked the looks I was pushing for the Henry). Now she listens and doesn't see any sense in an assualr weapons ban and other issues. She is a liberal. She can talk to liberal po;iticians. When liberals win, the more people like my wife and I , the more influence we have. The more converts we can get for the shooting sports, the better chance for the sports survival.
I have a few comments and questions for Romney voters. If you are patriotic, how can you support a draft dodger? He avoided service by college and Mormon missionary work for four (yes 4) years. He is a legal tax evader . None of his five sons have served (by the way I am a vet.). According to his wife Ann, Mormon missionary work is the same as service. Oh and by the wat the big stock market crash was caused by Bush (big R after his name). The recovery by Obama.
If you want the shooting sports to survive stop politicizing them!

There simply wasn't an acceptable alternative.

For anyone other than a single issue voter, one must weigh the consequences of their actions. For the single issue voter, they could't care less about the consequences of their actions.

I vote for Dems for other reasons than the second amendment. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't believe there is a serious threat to gun ownership by responsible citizens in this country for the foreseeable future. Sure, there will be some make-the-liberals-feel-better legislation like the assault weapons ban or maybe some controls on magazine capacity or something but those are largely window dressing. Nobody in politics is going to seriously touch the issue and the reason is simple. There are simply too many guns in too many hands in the U.S. It'll remain a hot potato, and that's a good thing.

What I can't figure out is why few talk about POTUS making it legal for me to carry, and carry concealed, in the National Parks and National Recreation Areas? How can that be anti-gun?
I live in the middle of a whole bunch of these areas in Arizona and Utah and they're not all full of people and rangers. There are very remote areas that I travel and I feel a lot better packing legally.

Why would someone bent on taking our guns open up these areas to us that were closed under baby Bush? Hello?

A more realistic economic policy. A more aware stance on public health and healthcare, including mental health. On a related note, an awareness that drug addiction is better addressed as a public health issue rather than a criminal justice issue. A less warmongering foreign policy (yeah, I know, drones - but compare that to phonying up a full-scale war in Iraq). A more labor-friendly position. Shall I go on?

I believe it was here I saw that an estimated 40something percent of Democrats own firearms. That's a lot of us if we speak with one voice.

I'm a Democrat, I own firearms, I shoot them, and I'm visible locally. If blue steel Dems in WA (credit to the OR Blue Steel Democrats for that wonderful name) get active and visible, we CAN move our county and legislative district organizations to a realistic position on firearms, and those organizations will move the State party.

Y'know, single issue voters are the easiest to manipulate 'cause there's only one string to pull. If you don't like being manipulated, don't vote based on a single issue.

Indeed, drugs are a health care/mental health issue, not a criminal justice issue.

Sadly, the vast majority of people missed that memo. Luckily, with Colorado and Washington decriminalizing recreational use of Cannabis, things are changing and people are beginning to wake up.

Hopefully the drug war will end soon.

I hope all these single issue voters also wake up one say. A very foolish way to vote if you ask me. You're just asking to be manipulated.
