Re: 7.62x45 what's the point?

Czechs thought it was a good intermediate rifle round. A few countries experimented with similar size ammo in the post WW2 period. Ultimately they dropped it for whatever reason in favor of the 7.62x39.

The Czech eggheads probably did that because ballistics proved it more effective in...

Aaaaand then the Soviet Union just squelched it. Made them use the 7.62x39 for uniformity. The Czech's consider themselves lucky to have been able to keep the VZ-58 as their "improved" Kalashnikov. Just had to chamber it for the approved round.

I like the Czechs. Invade our country? We'll just improve on your weapon designs while you're here. Rebuild your tanks, make them run more efficiently, just to show you what uncivilized oafs you are.

Whatch the "Unbearable Lightness of Being" for a little of that history.

Well. To be clear though, the VZ-58 and the AK, while appearing similar to the eye, have no real parentage in common other than the Soviet ammunition- it was a fully independent design based on earlier work with the CZ 515 and 552-

One could say in fact, that it's more similar to the SKS than to the AK, as it shares a similar bolt design and milled receiver.

I was barely a teen when Alexander Dubček was launching his "Socialism with a Human Face" movement in the "Prague Spring" lifting censorship seeking to liberalize society, and Brezhnev sent his tanks in to crush it in August of 1968.

(What a horrible, fucked-up year 1968 was! MLK and RFK shot, riots in the streets, especially Chicago, and NIXON elected, while KKK-lover George Wallace became the first 3rd party candidate since 1912 to win electoral votes. And that's just what was happening domestically!).

And to really enjoy Lena Olin’s hat. But be prepared for an excessive dose of existential anguish. A powerful movie that I was too young or stupid to appreciate when I first saw it. I did love her in the hat though.
