Discord or Slack

Post by Inquisitor »

After much gnashing of teeth, I’m going to create a discord and/or a slack server for us. Which one and why (in a comment).

Since the forum issues, and frequent requests for one of these, I decided I was being a Luddite by not considering it.

Dang. Can't vote. I have no idea what those two servers are, and I converted my lawn to garden years ago.

I do appreciate the efforts of folks here who know what they're doing. I appreciate the forum being up when it is. My house can be interesting for only so long without someone to talk guns, politics, and cheese cake with.

As someone who is on slack all day every day for work and also uses discord for gaming I much prefer Slack's chat functionality, presumably we'd be using that the most. I don't know about pricing though, that might push the Discord option.

My preference for slack is that I am already stuck with it for work and I really don't want to add another damn app to my universe.

I don't have enough software knowledge to make an intelligent vote; but I'm for anything that helps us log in and out and gives us the ability to post. This (if it posts) will be my second post out of a couple dozen attempts. since yesterday morning and the system hasn't let me log out.

Slack seems to be used by more people and easier to use.

Not familiar with them, though may have used them and didn't realize it. It appears that Discord's strength is audio and video chat which we don't do use at this time. Slack's strength seems to be asynchronous chat which is what we do here. As mentioned cost is always a factor. I have no idea of the benefits or liabilities of each platform on the back side which the admins control, is one easier to configure or maintain since this isn't a closed environment like a company.

Discord is known to analyze chat text chat content... not sure about Slack but I know it is for sure a thing with Discord.

Thanks for this. Discord seems to have problems with people swarming their sites with racist bullshit. I don't need that.

Eh that is mostly dependent on the subject of the Discord server... "Gamers" have been identified as an easy target for recruitment by domestic white terrorist groups.

Is this intended to replace the forum or supplement it?

Imo, slack and discord are pretty similar. Both just big chat channels.

I'm in Discord every day and have never come across any problems with that. I expect it only happens in the chats that have open membership and little to no moderation. All the chats I am in are small groups that would never tolerate any racist BS. Discord is just like any Internet forum in that regard.

Proposition:
Seeing as how slack is pantsing Discord at this point BUT there are so few replies that aren't 'get off my lawn.' What if we just set up a free slack server and tried it out?
