Here's what happened to the CMP:

"Many Black Panthers joined the NRA so that they could participate in the programs of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship that sold military surplus guns and ammo cheap."

That reminds me, I need to get involved with the CMP, they are still a good way to get a decent M1 at a very good price.

I did a college paper on the history of gun control...most of it is based on racism. All gun control was originally directed at blacks, Indians and immigrants. The Hurst press decried the evil minorities and connected them with drug use and attacks on white women. This led to calls for gun control for those evil people in society as well as ever larger and more powerful guns for police use. Most US police used .32 caliber revolvers in the late 19th century. They went to the .32 Long and the .38 S&W and later the .38 Special. The .357 Magnum was developed in the mid 1930's to penetrate automobile bodies.

The .38 Special and.357 Mangum revolvers ware the main US police armament till S&W 9mm auto slowly gained favor in the 1970's.

Very interesting. I didn't know that history, although there are plenty of '60s photos of Black Panthers holding M1 carbines and such.

That must have created an interesting dynamic within both the NRA and the DCM! I wonder if that was related to the phasing out of DCM, to be replaced by CMP. That happened in the 1990s, if memory serves.

(And yes, definitely pursue the CMP route to purchase an M1 Garand if you have an interest in doing so. You'll find some threads here discussing that.)

Thanks for bringing the Atlantic article to my attention. It's an absolute must read.

As a recipient of the Black Panther breakfast program and health care, I'll never shy away from telling my fellow white middle class friends about the comprehensive social programs that the Panthers had. Since our political class seems bent on further dismantlement of social programs in order to cover the tax cuts for the wealthiest in our society, it might be high time for a return to Panther social action.

I can get behind that.

So I'm about 2 thirds into this article and I haven't come across a mention of Robert F. Williams. Williams was way ahead of the Panthers, the Deacons, and Malcolm X.

I guess I have to go and buy Winkler's book to find out:
Adam Winkler is a professor of constitutional law at UCLA law school. This article is adapted from his forthcoming book, Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America, to be published by W. W. Norton in September.
