Iron sights for old eyes on CZ455

Post by GoldenRetrieversRule »

I'm using the original iron sights on my CZ455 Ultra Lux. Being a lady of a certain age, I have progressive lenses in my glasses. These don't help with the iron sights though since when I aim I'm looking through the upper "distance" part of the lenses. This causes the rear iron sight to be unfocused, showing a double vision line instead of a sharp line between which to sight the front sight. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to deal with this? I've tried using my contact lenses but the problem is the same. Is there a replacement set of sights that might be better than what I am using that is still not a scope? Maybe a peep sight or something (I don't know anything about peep sights for firearms, just that I have one for archery)? We have one of our CZ's outfitted with a scope and I would like to keep this one unscoped, but I still need to aim properly. I didn't do too badly yesterday shooting in the wind, shot about 1-1 1/2" groups at 25 yards, but could definitely do better if I could see properly. Thanks for any advice!

edited to add: Whatever I put on there I want it to be legal for competition

I have not but I am very interested in how it works for you. My eyes are old too.

I have progressive glasses and had similar problems to yours. I had a set of single focus glasses made that focus at about twenty inches from my face. They work great for pistols and for my CZ iron sights. Downside is that the target cannot be brought into focus.

I shoot almost nothing but peeps for iron sights anymore. The smaller the peep, the more the increase in depth of field for your vision. Regardless, looking through rather than at the rear sight is an improvement.

I don’t think much of Skinner, but Tech Sights are an excellent product (although I haven’t used the cz model specifically).

Great question, GoldenRetrieversRule. I found a used 452 Ultra Lux recently and am getting it out of layaway tomorrow. Part of me says go ahead and get a nice scope, another part of me wants iron sights. And if I use iron sights I need help. I know you haven't been on the forum very long, so let me give you this advice, if Marlene says something is good, you can take it to the bank. So I am studying everything she said in this post and the one she linked too.

Thank you for your suggestions! That adjustable aperture from Merit looks amazing, but I don't know if it would fit on my CZ. It looks like it's made for something larger. However, there's this:

Has anyone ever tried this? I'd feel like a Borg shooting with it lol!

I have one and it works. But it takes a bit of practice. I have not tried it with a rifle, just pistols. Pinholes are great since they can increase depth of field arbitrarily large but not without a cost. The smaller the pinhole, the dimmer the image.

Are they available again? Word was that Merit went belly up a year or so ago.

I prefer a peep on the rifle to trying to line up a hole on my glasses with rifle sights. I do like the glasses-mounted apertures for pistol shooting sometimes. Excellent for bullseye.

What. That's crazy! I may have to get one just to try it out for archery!

Here’s mine.

I find that blacking out you non-dominant eye helps. The issue is that, with the Merit’s aperture stopped down, the illumination difference between eyes is so large that my non-dominant eye takes over. Painting out the left lens fixed that.

This works well for me for pistol shooting although it takes some getting used too. I agree with Marlene that a pinhole may not work as well with a peep sight due to the precise alignment of apertures that would be required.

Here are some images of an inexpensive pair of safety glasses with the Merit device. If you want to try something like this, use flat black paint on the inside of the lens to reduce reflections into your non-dominant eye. However, no amount of paint will reduce how silly one looks when wearing these...

While I, too, have progressive lenses (being not of a "certain age" but 63) I'm lucky to see the center of the target. So I just use the middle of the progression to focus on the front and rear sights and try to line them up with the center of the target. This works pretty well up to 50 yards, but none of the indoor ranges go further than that.
With the contact lenses have you tried multi-focal? If they work for you they can be great. I see well with them, but have struggled with contacts since the 80's and mostly give up and wear glasses.
I'm guessing you don't want to go the 'scope route either.

Good luck!

Bucolic that is truly disturbing lol, and it looks like something that I would suggest for my husband, who would (and has been known to) do such things!

YankeeTarheel, I have wondered about that kind of contact lens. My opthalmologist offered to try them but they didn't sound so good from her description. Maybe it's worth looking into. I need new glasses too, so that may help once I get those!

I emailed Merit last night to ask what kind of mount would go on the CZ for the variable aperture peep, that is pretty cool and it would be super easy to adjust to the light conditions. If that doesn't work I may try the Tech Sight and a bunch of inserts. It looks like the inserts are made of plastic so I'm wondering how durable they would be over repeated insertions to change the hole size. They look pretty easy to change out, though. I have a Hamskea peep for my bow and the inserts are not hard to change but they are small and I also have a clarifying lens in it so little parts always fly out of my hands and roll around on the floor. I don't see that being a good thing at an outdoor range!!

In case the Merit folks ask, your UL has an 11 mm dovetail.

Your husband sounds like a great guy.

GoldenRetrieversRule (we're Belgian Tervuren and Sheepdog folk) multi-focal contacts either work or don't work. For me, they work, giving me middle distance and driving distance, but I need drug store readers to read when I'm wearing. My problem is it's hard for my eyes to tolerate ANY lenses...some days it's good, others it sucks.

Unlike bifocals, multifocals have alternating bands of the script and your eye automatically uses the correct one...if you can tolerate them. I can. They even make them in Toric for astigmatism as well, but they get pricier. OTOH, they last longer. Rather than 2 weeks, you can use them for a month.

We have a very active 12 1/2 year old Tervuren, who's a total love. Weird combo of sweet, loves EVERYONE, can lie on my lap for hours watching football, but is super-high- strung! Go figure!

Here’s a sight meant to mount on a dovetailed receiver. Merritt’s adjustable apertures are meant to replace the apertures in sights like this.
