I would worry about congealed lubricants in something such as the firing pin channel on a pistol or rifle. Also, the best rust preventatives are definitely not lubricants, so I would field strip, observe free movement of things such as firing pins and recoil plungers, detail strip where they don't move freely, lubricate, assemble and shoot.

Don't long-term store firearms in foam: you're likely to get rust. Also, plastic gun cases may give you rust with fluctuation in temperature and humidity.
