I don’t do unsupervised outdoor shooting areas anymore.
With some regrets, I am in the same camp. When I lived in Alaska and Utah, we used to go unsupervised shooting all the time. As I look back on it, I realize we were pretty safe, but we left a huge mess. Shot up cans, broken bottles. You can shame me all you want: I am actually ashamed. But the locations where we shot were already so trashed out that cleaning up our own personal mess did not make sense to me at that time (late 1970s). Now I could just never leave shot up beer cans out in the desert.
So safety and clean up are the biggest reason I now only shoot at supervised ranges. It is not nearly as much fun. I would MUCH rather see cans hopping in the air. But I had to become a grown up sometime. (Much delayed IMO.)
In Las Vegas,I was using the Clark County Gun Range as my only outdoor shooting spot. I recently found the Pro Gun Club south of Henderson, which save me 30 minutes of driving each way AND is a much better drive. Pro Gun Club has steel targets for pistol shooting - I am going to find out if it is a good enough replacement for aluminum cans
