Big Bang Theory

Never saw this show until now, despite it being currently in its tenth season. Not abailable for streaming, so on a lark I bought and downloaded the pilot episode. Pretty funny. I could have done without the laugh track, but I largely tuned it out. I'm a person of geeky tendencies who grew up in Pasadena where it's set so I get the jokes. I'm ordering the DVDs from the library.

You'll be sorely disappointed around Season 4. The canned laughter becomes the only thing laughing.

They filmed the first couple of seasons where I work. We were confused that the clothes that the supposed geeks wore was in sharp contrast to what we actually wore. Some of the characters had traits clearly based on real people, but if I said anymore I might wind up having to retire a year early. Never saw the show. Well, not true, I saw it on a TV in a Korean restaurant with the sound off. I take it that the show is about 3 closeted gay guys ("gay" and physics are never mentioned in the same sentence in real life, though trans is common - Both ways. A phenomenon ripe for study?) and a girl that some of them pretend to like?

SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT

Sort of. The male characters certainly play an aggressive role of nerds / geeks. 2 of the 4 are now married and another appears to be engaged based on the past season finale. Raj though has always played the closet character, very feminine but dates females.

I've only seen the one episode, so I'm in no position to take issue with that.
I have heard others (OK, just one person) say that the show validated their nerdiness.
I'll get back to you if/when I see a few more and get a better perspective.

My wife loves this show, so there are dozens of episodes on our DVR that she is always playing. I don't particularly like any of the characters, and the show itself isn't all that funny, but luckily the laugh track reminds you it's a comedy.

I do like some of the nerdy stuff, but overall it isn't very high on my list of preferred shows.
Do you believe in unlikelihoods?

Reality always trumps (sorry) TV. We had a (male) post-doc here who was wan and effeminate, walked a silky terrier named (oops, almost put the real name) Robespierre, and his wife looked like a porn actress who specialized in Mormon parts. Anybody like that ever show up on Big Bang? How about this guy:

They failed to mention that he only had two teeth.

Or my real fave:

They don't make 'em like that any more!

I think I also rapidly aged-out of the key demographic and audience. I stopped laughing and coincidentally stopped watching.

That would imply that there was a statistically likely audience for a show about Techies at some point in the past. The mind boggles. I just assumed that Koreans watching it with the sound off while there was nothing "good" on The Golf Channel was the target audience.

"You're watching the golf channel... All golf, all the time!"

What exactly is so fascinating about golf?!

Could be, I don't know how old you are.

I do think (and I have not seen demographic stats) there is the ability to capture multiple demographics from children through 40. I think this show appeals to children through the use of bright colors and goofy characters, it appeals to young adults because the characters appear to be in their mid-20's, and it appeals to adults because the cast is much older. Johnny Galecki is 42
