I could understand rifle brass, Marlene. Handguns are a slightly different affair. The once fired brass in .45acp I bought was all the same mfg. head stamp. 12 cents a case. I've even seen some vendors guarantee once fired, not many but some.
This forum might be the only one that people don't want to use anything but new. As it is, since I'm doing .45 colt next, I'll probably buy starline because the prices on once fired are at a premium,as much as $80, and very close to new pricing of starline or armscor.

Good option when you can. I don't think I'll ever go so far as collecting and melting lead, but cases when available at the range, I would do, if I see them coming out of new boxed ammo..

I spend a little more for Starline in most cases. I have a metric shit ton on Remington 38 spc +p brass though...I do use that.

In terms of bullets, I tend to go cheapest, although I prefer plated or jacketed for my revolvers

I think over the years of brass picking from public pits I have found maybe 30 pieces of 45 colt brass. Maybe 5 or 6 44mag, 0 44 spec. When I have replenished that brass it has always been in 500 count lots of Starline. A lot of the 45 brass is devoted to my really heavy loads that my 5 shot BFR likes so much. I feel that brass that will handle the extreme pressures of those loads are a lifetime investment
for factory or cowboy levels of pressure. Another thing about mixed lot range scrounging and then reloading on a progressive is that case length can vary so if you are going to set your seating and crimping stations to match up with a crimp groove on a particular bullet it can sometimes be a problem.

I guess this thread went off track, it's a good thread too, nice to have different options.

You bring up good points, too. Nowadays there's plenty of 9mm/223 to pick thru at ranges, but .45 colt is not abundant. At the various brass sources, there's a lot of "out of stock" notices. The ones that do have it aren't that much cheaper than new.
Geez, all threads seem to go sideways nowadays. Why, when I was a kid....

no argument from me. i usually start with a couple boxes of new store-bought, then reload and re-use them. i'm doing that now with 45-70. so far i have 80 of them.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?
