YouTube: How An AR-15 Rifle Works

#1 Post by danhue » Sun May 06, 2018 11:13 am

I came across these 2 popular YouTube videos explaining the inner workings of an AR-15:

Part 1, Components: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_RfiKEvoGA
Part 2, Function: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAqE-KLbiYc

If you haven't seen those, the production quality will blow you away.

Thanks, that was pretty cool!!!

It was very interesting and explained a lot but it left me with a question:
So....what's the advantage of gas impingement? Seems like that thin tube is one more thing to clog and is fragile.
I speak out of ignorance and curiosity, not an opinion.

For one: less weight.

You don't have the physical rod as your piston, instead the gas' impulse acts as an actuator, saves some ounces and money as you don't have to make those parts

Another reason for gas rather than a piston is that Stoner found that a piston system introduced loads on the bolt carrier group that caused wear on the BCG and upper receiver.
