went back to the old car forum, mistake.

#1 Post by lurker » Wed Oct 09, 2019 9:33 pm

used to have an american "sports car", sleek little low-slung 2-seater mid-engined plastic-bodied mid-'80s pontiac fiero SE notch. fun little car, 4 cylinder iron duke with a 4-speed. a blast on curvy roads, i've seen one here around town lately, a red formula.

anyway, there's a forum owned by a dutchman whose name i will not mention which IMO is the best technical resource on the web for the car. i was a regular there for about a decade, but for some reason, it always attracted conservatives, and at some point after i no longer owned the car, i gave up on the community because (1)no longer relevant to me, and (2) the few dissidents there are treated very badly by the regular crew.

so last week i stumbled on the password i'd written down and went back to see, and if anything the politics has gotten worse. it's sad, really. so i left a post saying "hi" and thanked them for reminding me why i left, and wished them all well. i reckon i'll pop in again in a week and see if anyone missed me ;) . there were (and still are) some good people there, even some good conservatives (no, not an oxymoron).

I have that experience when I go back to old forums, too. I haven't gone back to a car forum in a while, though.

It's why I left the Mazda forums as well. So annoying.

Imagine what 'Steel Soldiers' is like...it's about privately owned military vehicles.

I've had them for over 50 years. It is a morass of online RW effluvia now.

No biggie, I've probably forgotten more than they know.

This. Still in Desert Storm 'pink sand' with the inverted vee insignia.

Was 1st Armored in Nam, then Germany, Desert Storm, afterwards I bought it at a sale in Alameda.

1967 Kaiser-Jeep M54A1, Mack 673 Thermodyne Diesel power. 14.00-20 rubber. Really loud air horns. Nice view from there...

Somewhere I have pix of my '53 Dodge M37 3/4 ton, too.

Interesting, SR! What the heck do you do with it, rent it out for movies and TV shows? Looks like a truck they might have used in M*A*S*H (tho probably 15 years too modern).

They earn their keep here at 'Dragon's Plunder'. The 5-ton hauls materials and ex-GI's on Veterans Day. I outfit it with a rear boom & winch for pulling our well. 700' of 1" galvanized pipe & the wet end weighs quite a bit.

I sold my driver M37 a few years ago. I have a photo of it out north of town, doing what it was meant to do.

I do have another, it needs some work to put it back on the road.

Wow, that's really neat SR. You're quite a mechanic to keep them purring.

Trucks of that era were inherently simple to repair--no critical electronics to fail. Muscles & the correct tech manuals were all that is needed.

I found a couple more shots; the M54 is hauling the CIF panels I built our home with, and the M37 & Mrs. are at our cabin site in NM.

Another tangent perhaps but; my closest neighbor in Michigan worked at the Pontiac plant where the Fiero was built; he worked there though the plant change over and into the start of production, and was very proud of the product. I remember him bring home one of the first ones off the line and showing it off.

P.S. I'm also impressed by SR's vehicles; I've known some good mechanics but am not one myself.
